Date: 09/16/2010
Location: Online Training
What do a Librarian, a Technical Services Assistant, and an Administrative Assistant all have in common?
Fall Membership Meeting - 09/21/2010 - Twinsburg,OH

Date: 09/21/2010
Location: Twinsburg,OH
Join us for a fun and interesting program featuring author Ralph Keyes.

Talking Retro: Confessions of a Word Book Writer"

In this talk Ralph Keyes will discuss how researching his many books on language has changed in two decades'' time. As he puts it, the challenge has gone from dealing with a scarcity of information to confronting an over-abundance of data. Keyes''s program will focus on "retrotalk," the subject of his most recent book I Love It When You Talk Retro: Hoochie-Coochie, Double Whammy, Drop a Dime and the Forgotten Origins of American Speech. Finding the origins of what he calls "retroterms" posed unique research challenges ranging from finding the original 1812 cartoon of a "Gerry Mander" to locating old ads for snake oil liniment and a bottle of tabloids - the compressed pills that loaned their name to shrunken newspapers over a century ago. These accounts and many more will fill this entertaining and informative presentation.

Ralph Keyes has appeared on Oprah Winfrey, The Today Show, The Tonight Show, ABC World News Tonight, and 20/20. He has been a frequent guest on NPR radio shows such as All Things Considered, Talk of the Nation and Fresh Air. Please join us for a program you won''t want to miss.

You will also hear updates from NEO''s staff.

For this program NEO-RLS is offering special pricing for our Member libraries $15 for the first member of the library to attend and $5 for every staff member after. NEO will adjust the invoices to reflect the correct charge.

Solving The Personality Puzzle: Who''s Who in This Puzzle?--A.M. - 10/06/2010 - Online Training

Date: 10/06/2010
Location: Online Training
Are you an employee? A manager? Do you have a spouse? Children? Friends? Acquaintances? Do you volunteer in an organization? Are you on committees? Do you ever deal with people in any context at all? Of course you do! This workshop series is an invaluable tool in understanding your own personality style, as well as understanding those with whom you interact.

You''ll be introduced to Tightrope walkers, Ringleaders, Attendants and Clowns, and find out how we are all so different... and yet so alike. Why do they do the things they do and why do you react the way you do? Why do you struggle to communicate effectively with some people? Why don''t they have the same goals you do? Why don''t they see things the way you do (after all, you''re right, right?!?)?

In the second session, Who''s Who in This Puzzle?, we''ll delve deeper by finding out what makes them - and us - tick!
View More Information and Register

Violent Intruder Response Strategies - 10/26/2010 - Akron,OH

Date: 10/26/2010
Location: Akron,OH
The world is quickly becoming a different place. And while the chances of finding yourself or colleagues involved in an act of mass violence is rare, it is real. The attacks on places like Columbine High School and Virginia Tech University are reminders of how real these dangers are. You should be prepared. If your survival strategy is to rely on the police or military to arrive in time to save you, history has shown that to be unrealistic. You are the real "First Responder". You are responsible for the safety of you and yours. Easily said, but how does that correlate to real action? We will teach you easy, but effective, survival strategies for both armed and unarmed response to those meaning you and your colleagues harm.

An overview of a proactive philosophy gaining nationally acceptance designed to increase safety of private and public institutions should they become involved in the very rare event of a Violent Intruder Attack. Philosophy follows the long-standing Crime Prevention Model of General Deterrence, Specific Deterrence, and Hardening of the Target. Response Options is a Critical Incident Response Training company based in Texas. The philosophy and training programs of the organization are based on over 60 years Police SWAT and Military experience of its founders, as well as over 30 years classroom experience of some of our associates. Survival of violent events on the streets and battelfields has taught valuable lessons and skills needed to survive extreme violence. We have taken these learned skills and adapted them for use by building occupants in the event of a Violent Intruder. Lockdown (Securing-in-Place), and other passive strategies do not provide enough training or information to those in immediate lethal danger. Increasing the skill level necessary to hurt potential victims is actually quite easily effected through simple acts and mindset, but unfortunately, most of our citizens are not aware of these simple, but effective, strategies. We will show you.

Your Library Your Community - 11/10/2010 - Dublin,OH

Date: 11/10/2010
Location: Dublin,OH
The ability to connect to share ideas, resources, information, knowledge, and programs offers libraries an exciting means of achieving their own goals as well as those of the community at large.

While the landscape changed dramatically in Ohio''s libraries last year, it is imperative that we continue to reach out into our communities to not only show our value, but position ourselves as true destinations in community life.

Six of your library organizations in Ohio have collaborated on a joint education event entitled Your Library, Your Community.

OHIONET, the Ohio Library Council, NEO-RLS, NORWELD, SERLS, and SWON Regional Libraries have worked together to bring you a day of learning focused on libraries as the center of their local communities, as well as how to make your community presence even more pronounced to your customers, stakeholders, and users.

Join your peers from across the state at The Conference Center at OCLC on November 10 to explore programs that focus on using demographics and marketing to build a collection that mirrors your community make-up, examining the principles of Web 3.0 to continue to offer excellent customer service, and discussing the lessons we learn as children to teach us about the best ways to cooperate, collaborate, and share with each other to build better libraries.

Your Library, Your Community is a networking opportunity for the library community to further explore ideas on reaching out into our communities, fostering new creative library partnerships, and defining opportunities for Ohio libraries of all types and sizes.

Thanks to a grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), awarded by the State Library of Ohio, registration for this event is only $60. OCLC has generously provided meeting space to serve as the host site for this education event.

Solving The Personality Puzzle: How in the World Can I Communicate With Them?--A.M. - 11/18/2010 - Online Training

Date: 11/18/2010

In the final session of the series, How in the World Can I Communicate With Them?, we''ll learn how to stay on TRAC with specific ways to deal with each style.
View More Information and Register
