New Column

Today, I begin a series of columns aimed at keeping you abreast of emerging technology. My mission actually has a couple of purposes; I would also like to use this column as an example of publishing on The NOLA Desktop. So, I am also cajoling you authors and subject experts out there to pick up the gauntlet and inquire as to how you can express your views and share your knowledge on the Intranet. This column will probably run weekly, but we'll see how it progresses.

The first subject I seek to illuminate is the current browser wars that are taking place. Both Netscape and Microsoft are slugging it out in order to capture your desktop. There are some real problems with the current scenario, as well as some tremendous possibilities.

So, without further adieu; Browser Wars.

Ohionet Accounts Expire at Months End

Just another reminder, if you are still using an Ohionet email address provided by NOLA, it will expire at the end of June. You have several options as outlined in the March issue of NOLA Notes. It is important to know that at the end of June, any mail addressed to your Ohionet account will be killed unless you make alternative arrangements.

You can keep your Ohionet account by either contacting us or Ohionet. The benefit to keeping the Ohionet account is that you get dial-up access to the Internet. The contact at Ohionet is Mary Conroy and she can be reached at 800.686.8975 or [email protected].

If you represent a public library, you can get an Oplin email account at no charge. Use this form to apply for an account. You also can get accounts for all of your staff.

Finally, there are several good, local commercial providers. Typical access charges range from $12.95/mo. - $20/mo. for unlimited access to the Internet.

Of course, you can also use free services like the Youngstown Freenet or even some of the freemail providers like Hotmail or Juno.
