NOLA Member Status Update

If it seems quiet around here, it is because we have been doing a fair amount of catching up, consolidating and generally lining up ducks. I have been visiting various member libraries in a naked attempt to evangelize Intranet community, and I must say from what I have seen so far, we have some creative and innovative folks in our membership. Get the details.

Internet Outage causes major snafus

Last week, you probably experienced some problems with your connections on Thursday. It all began with a mistake at the InterNIC. Like these guys need another reason for people to be angry with them. There is considerable controversy swirling over the InterNIC's ownership of the .com, .edu, and .net domains with a number of alternative plans being proposed. Meanwhile, an engineer made a simple mistake that is estimated to have caused some 35% of the net to be unreachable on Thursday. Here's what happened...

NOLA welcomes a new employee

NOLA welcomes a new employee to the office on July 23. Rose Marie Pecchio is our new office assistant/administration. She will work part-time (24 hours a week). Rose Marie previously worked as an Office Associate at the K Mart on Belmont Avenue, Youngstown, Oho, until its closing in January 1997. She began to take computer classes to sharpen her skills and we feel very fortunate to have found her!

Notable Books Committee

We are honored to have Dr. Carolyn Brodie from Kent State University be the only Ohio representative to the Notable Books Committee for the Association for Library Service to Children. She sent me the following letter and I am sharing it with you. Nominations may still be made before the following dates: August 8, October 10, and November 20. This is a chance for you to contribute suggestions directly to a national book committee - I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity.

Sue McCleaf Nespeca

Dear Sue:

I am serving as a member of the Association for Library Service to Children’s “Notable Children’s Book Committee” from now through January 1999. I would be most appreciative of any suggestions that you and the children’s librarians in your library system might share with me during my tenure on this committee.

Those who wish to suggest books for consideration may send a note to my attention at the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science. I may also be contacted through e-mail at [email protected] Three more sets of nominations are due this year on August 8, October 10 and November 20.

The criteria for a “notable children’s book” includes consideration of the following: (1) literary quality; (2) originality of text and illustrations; (3) clarity and style of language (4) excellence of illustration; (5) excellence of design and format; (6) subject matter of interest and value to children; and (7) likelihood of acceptance to children. Further criteria includes venturesome creativity, commendable quality, and reflection and encouragment of children’s interest in an exemplary way. A “notable children’s book” is one that is defined as one that is worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, and is considered outstanding. The books for the “1998 Notable Children’s Books” list must have a copyright of 1997.

Thank you for your assistance. I am looking forward to these many challenging months of reading...reading...reading...

Sincerely,

Carolyn S. Brodie, Ph.D
Associate Professor
