Someone Had to Say It

Well, it looks like some folks are finally starting to frame the discussion about cataloging the web. There are some unique perspectives in this Wired article. One of the more compelling ideas is the notion that somebody needs to archive pages. This will ensure access to valuable articles and sites that may not exist in their original location for various reasons. One of the more controversial standpoints presented is the divorce of this online library from public libraries. The author clearly sees professional librarians filling the need; but he seems to be positing a future where the public library infrastructure is unable to accomodate the need.

New OPLIN Training Program

The OPLIN training agenda is set for the rest of the year and there are a few changes. There are no longer vouchers; it is a first come, first serve process. There are a total of six training classes. Visit our Continuing Education section and sign up now.

Chapter One

It appears that publishers have found a great use for using the Internet as a funnel and libraries could easily stand to benefit. Many of the major newspaper sites are publishing the first chapters of new books. Of course, there are also links to the major online booksellers, in case you just cannot live without a tome after perusing initial passages. I believe that libraries could easily link into these pages from their own homepages and build inviting funnels for patrons.

Budget PCs

PC World puts together a good review of current budget PC offerings with Dell leading the way.
