From the Field - Kenneth Bell

AccessOhio to Further TOMCAT Mission

NOLA, NORWELD, OVAL, SWORL and the State Library are working cooperatively to extend the ILL process. Building on the best of each system's current process, the new program will operate in an online fashion using Internet protocols. Ease of use, timely updates and significantly lower costs are some of the benefits envisioned. The group is being chaired by Eric Anderson, Executive Director of OVAL. Eric has worked hard to build a consensus and create a group that can foster initial cooperation with possible statewide ramifications. Read an excellent summary of the project prepared by Allan Gray; Executive Director of NORWELD, for his membership.

KidsTech II

On Thursday, September 11, I went to KidsTech II workshop in Columbus. Among the information I learned, probably one of the most valuable sites I heard about was BCK2SKOL, Net Lessons for Librarians. BCK2SKOL, hyperlink to http://web.csd.sc.edu/bck2skol/bck2skol.html, presents a beginner's course on the Internet for librarians and other information professionals. This up-to-date website provides more than 30 lessons, which can be consulted when forming your "Internet Training Classes" for patrons. The information provided is very easy to understand. Check it out.

Reference Service Interest Group Attacks Cleveland

The reference services interest group field trip on Monday, September 22 was a success! After fighting a bit of Cleveland traffic, we arrived at Cleveland Public Library, Louis B. Stokes Wing. A decor like nothing we've ever before, this library is technologically set for the 21st century. The Main Library, currently under renovation, is due for completion in 1998 (another field trip?).
We walked to the Foundation Center, which is an independent nonprofit information clearinghouse. The Foundation Center operates libraries in five locations, including the regional collection in Cleveland (a cooperating collection within the NOLA region is housed at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 330-744-8636). To provide assistance to grantseekers in your community, The Foundation Center website, hyperlink to www.fdncenter.org, should have a place on your library homepage.

Finally, we visited the Government Printing Office Bookstore and had the opportunity to purchase publications. Overall, the group had a super day (weather-wise, too!) learning tips and information to use at their libraries.
