This five-day, residential, experiential program of leadership training will permit the participants to examine their own leadership style, develop leadership skills for a changing environment, and identify their professional and personal goals. Attendees will develop a network of professional peers and interact with a select group of outstanding library leaders who will serve as mentors.

This Institute will be held at the Inn at Honey Run, 6920 County Road 203, Millersburg, OH. Opening reception and check-in is Sunday evening, September 10. Workshop ends by noon on Friday, September 15.

Library access policies in the news
While filtering discussions are common in library publications, it’s rare that the filtering debate finds its way into computer trade publications, but recently Internet.com made mention of the debate between ALA and the Family Research Council. Expect things to heat up as ALA’s Freedom of Information Day approaches.

State Library Update
The latest updates from the State Library Programs and Development Division are now available; learn more about: the Small Public Libraries Conference, the State Library move, family literacy at the state library, the LSTA grant process, what’s new with youth services and more.

Stephen King releases exclusive E-book content
Stephen King has become the first major author to release a publication exclusively in electronic format. Released Tuesday morning, Kings newest short story, Riding the Bullet, is available electronically from Barns and Nobel.com with a list price of $2.50. Based on very positive early response to the offering expect more authors to offer electronic exclusives.  NOLA members wanting to evaluate the E-book can contact the NOLA office to arrange a demonstration.

American Memory – Ready for Spring
With the approach of Spring, Library of Congress is highlighting some their baseball collections available through the American Memory project. One very intriguing collection contains over 2000 baseball cards from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The collection highlights the early history of baseball and may provide some ideas for libraries developing their own digital collections.

A use for web errors
Most web users have experienced the dreaded 404 error (page not found). Until now these 404 errors have generally served up millions of useless pages – telling users only that what they wanted was not found. Well a Dutch ISP has formed an interesting partnership through which users stumbling across 404 errors will receive advertising messages, not a traditional 404 error page. Impact for library sites? Why not create 404 error pages that helps to redirect your users to valuable library resources, such as the catalog and community information?

Biometrics Primer
Now that Windows2000 supports various add-in authentication mechanisms, many of which involve the use of biometrics, expect to hear much more about the use of these technologies. ABCNews has developed a very good primer for users new to the concept. Be sure to click on the InterActive section of the story of a brief description and analysis of the various technologies.

Clearing up Computer Text
It’s not any secret the computer text can be difficult to read. Numerous studies have shown that users read much more slowly from the computer screen and that most users will print long documents, rather than read them from the screen. The reason is based in the inability of the computer to render text on the screen in the same fashion as text can be placed on a page. Technically speaking - computers work in the land of pixels (small squares). Thus any rendered text is actually composed of these small squares arranged into various shapes, of course it can be difficult to make the letter "o" from a series of squares, but the computer tries.

Two inititives (ClearType – Microsoft and CoolType – Adobe) have been recently introduced that allow computers to display text in a much more readable manner. These technologies manage the information on your screen differently (actually working at the "sub-pixel" level) allowing much greater resolution and significantly improved readability.

New Technology Watch – Viewlets
Imagine your website providing users with tutorials demonstrating various technical activities (such as adding bookmarks, downloading files, etc.) With Teach2Earn’s Viewlets technology libraries can quickly and easily add hundreds of these mini-tutorials their web pages for free (in fact they may even pay you!) and with a minimal amount of effort. Visit the Teach2Earn site to view the list of existing tutorials, get instructions on how to add Viewlets to your site and to download the authoring software so you create your own custom Viewlets. Still not sure how libraries could use the technology take a look at a viewlet from Hubbard Public Library
