Tech Connections 2
Ohio libraries spend millions on technology each year. Librarians struggle daily with technology-related decisions and with planning for the development of information delivery systems to their local patrons.  We recognize the need among our libraries for the latest up-to-date information on technology trends, products, planning, administering and funding all of the technologies that await us in this new millennium.

TECH CONNECTIONS 2 will meet this need for improving the technological skills of:

  • library administrators
  • technology coordinators
  • webmasters
  • continuing education staff
  • other interested library staff members

Full program details, conference registration and hotel information for this 3-day event are available at: http://rls.lib.oh.us/tc2/tc2index.htm

NOTSL Scholarship
The Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) announces the availability of the 2000 NOTSL Scholarship. One or more scholarships, for a maximum total of $1,000, will be awarded to persons currently working in a professional, para-professional, or support position in a technical services area in an Ohio library, or to persons currently taking graduate coursework in library science.

The content of the proposed educational activity must relate to technical services: cataloging, acquisitions, serials, preservation, or management of technical services. While this award may be used for short-term continuing education, it will not be awarded to pay for training required of an applicant by their employer. Typically funded activities can include costs for workshops or coursework, professional meetings, or research.

The scholarship must be used for activities that take place between July 1, 2000 and June 30, 2001.

The greater the involvement in librarianship, whether through work or school, the greater the preference that will be given to an applicant. Preference will also be given to applicants from northern Ohio.

Information and an application form are available via the Web at: http://www.purl.org/net/notsl

Free E-education?
Click here for a free "Ivy League" education. That’s the vision of Michael Saylor, a software executive who recently donated $100 million toward the development of a online university that would not only provide "Ivy-League" quality courses, it would be free for everyone. Saylor plans to begin offering courses within the next few years, using leading subject experts to provide course content, which will be distributed to students on demand via streaming video. While Saylor has demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm for the project it has not been shared by all. Some detractors express doubts about the long-term viability of the concept, the availability and willingness of experts to donate their time to teach courses and the worth of a cyber-degree.

The Breaking of CyberPatrol
Two security and privacy experts have developed a program (cphack) that decrypts CyberPatrol’s list of blocked sites. The development has certainly raised the attention of Mattel, CyberPatrol’s parent company, which quickly filed multiple law suits to:

  • Remove the essay describing the development of cphack
  • Stop the distribution of the cphack utility
  • Collect the IP addresses of all visitors to the original site

In addition to the legal action Mattel also issued a series of press releases to make the program appear in a very negative light. Why all the excitement about this program? Simple – the CyberPatrol block list is not intended for public review, there are sites listed that will certainly raise questions about the blocking criteria used by the company. It also opens the company to significantly more questions about site blocking accuracy, as were recently experienced by Symantec, maker of the popular I-GEAR filter.

Diary of Angelini Guiseppe Marco Benini
Somewhere in the wilds of western North America, off the Pacific coast

Well, diary, I am a even further from my Venetian home than before. I made the mistake of a joinng up with the explorers Lewis and Clark (Reflinks 910: Geography & Travel -Explorers). Unbeknown to me, they were NOT maritime explorers! I guess I should have a noticed all the trees, but I just thought it was a shortcut to the
harbor. After a few weeks I realized - no ocean! Of course, Lewis told a me they Were heading toward the ocean - the Pacific ocean!(Reflinks 551:Oceanlink)

Additional entry:
Mama mia! do my feet hurt like Isabella! We have been traveling for months now and I realize why I am a sailor. I don'ta like the land! The only high point is the beautiful bella Sacajawea! (910) Such a sweet smile! Such a fine, strong body! Such a...

Additional entry: I finda myself stranded outside of a native village due to a slighta misunderstanding between myself and Mr. Lewis. I thinka I will from now on, keepa my comments about beautiful women to myself. And a as soon as the swelling goes a down around my eye, I will look for another way to geta back home. Holy mother
of Sicily, the trees are Really big here!
