NOLA and Y2K
While all NOLA systems are fully prepared for the date change on
January 1, 2000 we will be taking precautions similar to many corporate and governmental
agencies to safeguard vital systems. As a result all NOLA computing resources will be
taken offline at 5:15 PM on December 31, 1999 and will remain offline until 8:00 AM
January 2, 2000.
Statewide Resource Sharing
The official minutes (December 8, 1999) of the Statewide Resource Sharing Steering
Commitee can be found at http://oplin.lib.oh.us/products/ABOUT/rs120899.htm.
At the meeting updates on funding, technology, delivery and policy were discussed.
White House orders e-vote study and more
The National Science Foundation, under orders from the Whitehouse, will
conduct a one-year study on the feasibility of online voting. The study will bring
together legal scholars, technical specialists and experts on the democratic process to
consider whether cybervoting might increase turnout without creating problems with fraud
and privacy. Additionally, the White House will order the creation of a single Internet
"portal" that can be used to reach any government Web site. By the end of next
year, the initiative promises to have the 500 government forms most used by citizens
available for downloading.

Internet ScamBusters
Many of you have received email messages from friends or
co-workers about "terrible" computer viruses or the latest way to make millions
while working at home. In fact just last week I received two email messages promising
either enormous wealth or instant destruction of my computer, both messages were untrue
but how do you know what is legitimate and what isnt? Internet ScamBusters can help.
With answers to many common questions about online "rip-offs", urban legends,
non-existent computer viruses and more ScamBusters is an excellent source for both library
staff and patrons.

Palm OS in cell phones?
Motorola will license Palm OS (the operating system used in
PalmPilots) for use in cell phones and other wireless devices. Look for Palm OS as the
likely choice for the future of handheld computing and other small devices (such as
pagers, tablet PCs, etc.)

E-Sales and E-Gripes increase
How well are net resellers doing this year? Traffic and
revenue are up substantially, but satisfaction appears to have dipped a bit. Users who are
less satisfied identified two problem areas: lack of system stability and difficulties
with product delivery. While both appear to be part of the growing pains associated with
any new business (remember Amazon.com is less than five years old) customers are quick to
purchase from other vendors or return to "traditional" shopping.
