Morley and Fairport Harbor Libraries
selected for PRIME TIME series
Congratulations to the Morley and Fairport Harbor Libraries for
being selected to participate in the PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME series. The
Prime Time series promotes family literacy and is designed specifically for under served
families with children aged 6 to 10. Separate activities are also available for pre-school
children aged 3 to 5. The program helps low-income, low-literate families bond around the
act of reading and learning together. It teaches parents and children to read and discuss
humanities topics, and aids parents and children in selecting books and becoming active
public library users.
netLibrary donation
netLibrary, an e-book publisher, is offering free access to their
collection of 150,000 electronic titles to 100 public libraries across the US for the next
six months. This offering, along with the tremendous success of the Rocket e-book during
the holiday season, represent the true emergence of electronic texts as a viable media
format.

Free-DSL (Brief update)
Did you read the article in Desktop News last week about
Free DSL service? To date well over 100,000 folks around the county have signed up! It
appears that a large customer base is ready for DSL, if Broadband Media Group can deliver
the access.

Domains Hijacked (again!)
Internet domain hijacking is an increasingly popular denial of service in which attacker
submit phony DNS update requests to Network Solutions, asking that the IP addresses
associated with a registered domain (such as yahoo.com) be changed. Once the change
request is approved the domain is effectively "cut off" from the internet as a
whole and all traffic intended for the domain is redirected as an attacker desires.

Transmeta to release top secret chip
One of the most influential and least understood
companies in the technology business will release their first product Wednesday, a
microprocessor. The Transmeta
(http://www.transmeta.com) processor, codenamed Crusoe, has been in development for
the past five years and the company claims it has been designed differently than any other
processor ever created. Is this a big deal? Maybe, any company that employs experts like
Linus Torvalds (creator of Linux) and has backing from folks like Paul Allen (Microsoft)
has a chance to make an impact.

Virtual Roundtable
Let's face it...the world wide web is where it's at for the next century.
E-commerce will become the number one method of purchasing goods and services - the
question is, how can we, as libraries, utilize e-commerce to provide quality customer
service and feedback to our patrons?
More and more people are relying on e-mail for communication with their employers, family,
friends, even neighbors! I received an e-mail from my neighbor just yesterday, while I was
out of town, telling me that he had some boxes for me that had been delivered by UPS!
One way that the web can help us is by using it for marketing research - analyzing
patrons' needs and wants, and for test marketing ideas through focus groups of some of
your online users.
Janice Gjertsen, director of business development for Digital City in New York, an online
entertainment company, believes strongly in testing new programs. She wanted to gauge
reaction to her company's website, an events guide to New York City. She decided to add a
twist to the traditional roundtable discussion, by taking her focus group online. It
proved to be much more effective and a lot less expensive.
Using a chat room in Digital City's "Total New York" website, Janice looked on
from her desktop computer and used software to let her interact with the moderator without
the focus group knowing she was there. Janice got the information she needed, the focus
group participants were more willing to participate because it took less time out of their
busy days, and very creative ideas were generated that could be implemented quickly. The
results surprised Janice Gjertsen: "People were more honest online than they were in
our traditional focus groups," she said.
Think about this concept...expand your horizons...think "outside the box"...how
can YOU use the web to receive important customer research information from your patrons
in this digital age?
"Technology is only an enabler. We don't need to go faster; we need to develop a
deeper relationship online with each of our customers."
