NOLA Will Market Technology Training Workshops to Area Businesses

Yesterday was a red letter day for NOLA. Melissa Lattanzi, Continuing Education Coordinator, conducted our first NOLA corporate training session and it was for staff in the Mahoning County Commissioner's office. Beginning in 1999, NOLA will offer software training to area businesses, non-profit, and government agencies one day each week. Based on a survey conducted of small to medium-sized companies in the Trumbull County area, there is a defined need for software product training. We believe that NOLA can find a "niche" in this market with companies that are seeking low-cost, effective training for their support and management staff, either at the NOLA Training Center or at the customer's location. If you know of any area companies that may need to utilize our business training services, please contact Melissa with the names and we will follow up with them to determine their training needs. Brad Stephens, our NOLA Technology Coordinator, and Melissa can also conduct training sessions for member libraries. We recently developed workshops for Geauga County and Warren-Trumbull County Public Libraries.

This and That

The NOLA Staff welcomes Ohio's Regional System Directors to the office today for the first time for two days of meetings. We hope to coordinate more continuing education programs and begin discussions about a statewide vendor discount program. We will also be talking about AccessOhio with the OVAL and NORWELD Directors.

Before long you will hear about a new service we are developing called Experts on Call. Stay tuned.

Expect to receive the latest issue of NOLA Notes in the mail or delivery on Monday.

I could not believe how many NOLA member librarians gave presentations at the OLC Conference last week in Columbus. Your names will be included in the NOLA Notes. Did you catch the RefLinks presentation? If not, it was your loss because it Sara Payne, Leslie Pallotta, Jeanne Wisniewski and Karen Mateer were super. You can learn more about the RefLinks Project at the November 30th Reference Services Interest Group meeting. Plan to attend.

Click here for additonal information and select Reference Services. Hope to see you there.

Reflinks Project

The Ohio Reflinks Project, created and supported by NOLA, is a rapidly growing website which now contains more than 1,000 links. The Dewey Decimal Arrangement makes it user-friendly for reference librarians to navigate. Join us at our next meeting, Monday, November 30th at 10:00 AM in the NOLA Office. As an added treat, hot off their triumphant engagement at the OLC Annual Conference, both URLene and Reflinks Woman will make an appearance.

This month, we feature Windows to the Universe Winner of the Ohio Reflinks Project's coveted Golden Chain Award for Excellence, this exquisite site from the University of Michigan contains a multitude of information about the Earth, the solar system, the universe and more. Greek and Roman Mythology is covered, enabling a full understanding of its relationship to the stars. Beginner, intermediate and advanced information on all subjects is just a mouse-click away. A full exploration of this web site is needed to grasp the depth of coverage.

Tomorrow's Trends...Today's Libraries

"Climb High...Climb Far...Your Goal the Sky...Your Aim the Star"
Anonymous Inscription on Hopkins Memorial Steps,
Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts

What a wonderful motivational saying! We all need to think about climbing those steps once in awhile...reaching for those stars.

One way to do this is through continuing education and being informed about the trends that will affect our libraries in the future. NOLA's Second Quarter Membership Meeting will be a unique opportunity to learn about your library's future...and how you can position yourself to ensure the success of your "step into the future".

I am reminded of one of my favorite songs:

"My future's so bright, I gotta wear shades"
The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
Timbuk3

Our future is bright...there are some very exciting things on the horizon for our business...and some challenges as well. Get those sunglasses out!

The whole world in your hand?

Just getting familiar with cellular phones and laptops? Well things are about to get smaller, much smaller. A new breed of tiny devices (called Palm Top computers) is now ready for "prime time". These newer devices can act as pagers and cell phones allow users to browse the Web and read email. Palmtop computing is a popular trend in the computing  industry and should be making a big impact among computer users within the next year.
