Digital Bibliography

Roy Tennant's new column provides some additional info and understanding concerning an article in this month's Library Journal about cataloging the net. The article is entitled "Cataloging the Net: Are Librarians too Late?" (Library Journal; Oct. 98). Proposing a new understanding he calls digital bibliography, the article focuses on annotated collections, continuous link verification and subject keywords. The article is a great reference to several of the high profile organizing projects currently in development.

Corporations Feeling the Librarian Need

A nice if somewhat convoluted article about corporate intranet librarianship and the need for organization.

Internet2 (gallbladdersurgery.org)

The high speed Internet initiative composed of 120 research universities began with a bang by broadcasting live surgery. The effort seeks to support development in the areas of national research objectives, distance education and lifelong learning. Read the Story.

eBooks Heating Up

Microsoft is endorsing the concept of eBooks. They are currently working with several publishers on establishing a set of common standards (read MS standards). Read the Story. Also, Overdrive Systems is hoping to capitalize on this emerging area with its BookWorks technology that seeks to deliver books on various Windows-based platforms. They have established an online download "Bookstore" called Book Aisle. Patrons download books in Browser Book format. According to the website "An OverDrive Browser Book is a new digital book format in which you read the title using your own web browsing software (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.) It combines the familiarity of Internet navigation with the convenience of downloading books for off-line use." The company is focusing on end to end electronic publishing by providing a catalog, secure payment and encryption and copyright protection. Read the Story.

Strange Bedfellows

In the ongoing filtering suit at the Loudoun County Public Library, a renegade arm of the National Organization for Women has joined the pro-filtering segment. Citing harrassment concerns, the group signed a friend of the court brief in support of the suit and filters in the library. The national headquarters of the group has responded that NOW as a nationwide organization is against filtering. Read the Story.
