From the Field - Kenneth Bell

First Month, First Chapters

This was profiled in TDN previously, but I think it is a great idea. The New York Times Book Site has hundreds of first chapters online to bestselling books. On the library homepage, this could be great starting point to locate a good read.

LJ's Year End Best Book List

There's cod on this year's best books list. Not to mention polar bears, mathematicians, a photographer and a composer, battling politicians, an edgy pot farmer, a big flood, and plenty more you might not find on other lists.

Teacher's Resource

An excellent online resource for teachers has been created by publisher BantamDoubledayDell. The site helps teachers find creative ways to teach award-winning books and also has interviews with such famous authors as Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and Lois Lowry. You can find the site at www.bdd.com/teachers

TC signs for 1998

The NOLA Regional Library System is pleased to announce that Ken Bell, Technology Consultant, signed a one year agreement to continue working with NOLA during 1998. Among his many accomplishments in 1997 are the development of The NOLA Desktop, the design of many high level technology workshops, and working with numerous library organizations to develop AccessOhio. He will play a key role in the development of the second phase of AccessOhio, a statewide interlibrary loan system. We look forward to the second year of working with Ken.

SLO Resource Sharing Committee

The following information was received from the State Library concerning statewide resource sharing. NOLA has played a major role in the development of AccessOhio and I strongly encourage you to volunteer for one of these task forces. Our input will be very valuable because of our past experience with resource sharing and document delivery.

STATEWIDE RESOURCE SHARING: THE TIME HAS COME

The State Library of Ohio, in cooperation with OPLIN and the Ohio Library Council announces a planning effort to establish statewide resource sharing and document delivery for Ohio's public libraries.

Four Task Forces will be formed, including:

*Resource Sharing Policies to establish policies for resource sharing;

*Technology to plan the architecture which will allow all public libraries to search the catalogs of all other public libraries and request materials

*Document Delivery to design a statewide document delivery system

*Funding and Management to plan for management of the statewide system and develop recommendations for financial support of the system

A Steering Committee will be formed consisting of the Task Force co-chairs, the State Librarian, the Executive Directors of OPLIN and OLC, and two general project co-chairs.They will be responsible for the overall direction of the project and for preparation of the final report.

State Librarian Mike Lucas has established a short timeline for the project, in an effort to include any possible funding request from the legislature in the next budget request, due in September.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR ALL THE TASK FORCES. Anyone in the Ohio public library community wishing to volunteer should contact Roger Verny, State Library of Ohio, at 614-644-6849(voice); 614-466-3584(fax); or [email protected]
