Telecom Bill Pieces Ruled Unconstitutional, FCC to Appeal

A Texas judge ruled last week on several key parts to the landmark Telecom Bill, effectively gutting it according to some industry folk. The ruling is primarily focused on the provisions for RBOCs, or Baby Bells to enter the long distance market. The FCC has vowed to appeal the ruling.

FCC Addresses USF Issues Raised by Petitioners

On Christmas eve, the FCC released this press release concerning issues raised around the Universal Service fund. Of particular interest was this statement concerning eligibility; "finds that, to the extent that states, schools, or libraries build or purchase wide area networks, the costs are not eligible for universal service discounts."

Newspaper Archives on the Web

Here's a helpful compendium of links to newspaper archives. Many are fee based, but the links page tells you in advance. If you wish to access the pay per view articles, they are typically $1.00 per and you can obtain a LibraryCard from Infinet for the service. Here is a direct link to InfiNet's NewsLibrary.

Please inform any staff that does not have access to The NOLA Desktop to receive this message. Deadline to register for this workshop is January 30 (firm date).

Summer Reading Materials

Public Libraries should have received order forms for Janway materials. If you did not, your library's name may have fallen off the list. Contact Ruth Metcalf via email [email protected] or by phone 614-644-6910. For the first year, you may order materials online at the Janway site which will be available within the next week. The address is http://www.janway.com.   Color representations of materials will be depicted under "statewide cooperative reading programs."

The 1998 summer reading manual is late this year but should arrive at the end of January. This needed to be ordered previously. A composite of the hard copy with be online at the Winslo site by mid February.

Contact me if you have questions on any of the above.
