Legislative Day

We are pleased to announce that we expect 47 persons for the NOLA Legislative Day Breakfast on March 18th in Columbus - 19 legislators, 26 librarians, and 2 NOLA staff. Our librarians and trustees will have the opportunity to talk with their legislators about how libraries play a "value-added" role for the educational systems at a time when school funding and educational improvements are critical legislative issues. Legislators will also be encouraged to build on what has proven to work: libraries functioning as life-long learning centers. Our libraries serve their constituents (families, students, teachers) with the information they need and the skills necessary to process that information effectively. I would like to thank the NOLA Legislative Committee for developing this Breakfast and the materials that will be shared with our legislators.

E-Rate Information

NOLA hosted a satellite teleconference on e-rate implementation on March 4. One very important piece of information was given - there are seven ways your Form 471 can be thrown out and you need to avoid these pitfalls. The pitfalls are posted on the web site along with much more up-to-date information that was just posted ( as mentioned by Bill Morris on the OPLIN listserv). Check it out. Also, another site mentioned often during the teleconference was http://www.neca.org that provides much helpful info.

If you are looking for information to calculate the discount you will receive for existing telecommunications services you can check the site from Funds for Learning which has an e-rate calculator. Finally 3Com offers a series of briefings, a workbook (Everything you always wanted to know about e-rates), and a reference disk. As you have probably figured out, information on the e-rate changes daily and the only way you can keep on board is by checking information online.

Summer Reading Programs on the Web

At a recent children's services interest group meeting we were talking about the importance of promoting summer reading programs at a library's home page since so many children and teens are spending large amounts of time searching the web.

I shared a few sites with the group and several have expressed interest now in creating their own "summer reading spots" on their home page. Explore these for ideas!
