Just the Facts, Please

People are gleaning more and more information from the web experience. Pouring through web statistics can help you design and maintain the library webpage in a way that is more helpful to your customers. Internet World has posted the Statistics Toolbox. While much of the information is geared at making money, there are some interesting demographic categories as well. A Most Trafficked Site statistic is valuable in helping you add links that are in big demand by your customers.

If your homepages are on the NOLA Webserver, you can find a monthly statistical report in a subdirectory of your site (http://www.yourlib.lib.oh.us/webreport/report.doc). If you have more than one domain name, there are two reports. If you need more info, feel free to contact me.

Abilene

Vice-President Gore recently unveiled a new national networking initiative aimed at research universities known as Abilene. Building on the Internet2 initiative begun last year, Abilene is an IP based network that will provide extreme bandwidth to universities across the country. The project holds much promise for libraries, as the universities are doing much in the area of digital library work. One analogy of the project holds that the entire collection of the Library of Congress could be sent across Abilene in 20 seconds. Of course, they need to get it digitized first. Abilene is an infrastructure that will be complimentary to the Internet2, Next Generation Internet and vBNS projects discussed in previous Desktop News issues.

Duke Does Digital Image Library

The Digital Image Access Project is a Duke University effort to "explore issues involved in using digital image access systems to both manage and improve access to photograph collections."  Approximately 1000 images have been digitized around the theme "The Urban Landscape". The project is part of a larger digital library called The Digital Scriptorium, which includes excellent resources such as the Duke Papyrus Archive.

CancerWeb Online Medical Dictionary

The OMD is a searchable dictionary created by Dr Graham Dark and contains terms relating to biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, medicine, molecular biology, physics, plant biology, radiobiology, science and technology. It includes: acronyms, jargon, theory, conventions, standards, institutions, projects, eponyms, history, in fact anything to do with medicine or science. It is part of the larger CancerWeb project.

Swinging Through Time

The Internet Public Library has created a site dedicated to the history of jazz in Detroit. The Graystone Museum and the story of Detroit jazz is a nice site focusing on the Graystone Ballroom; a luxurious '20s temple to nightlife and that new music sweeping America -- jazz.
