Nearby Grantsmanship Workshops

All types of libraries in Ohio now have the opportunity to submit grants for LSTA funding. Recently 156 libraries submitted mini-grants and the State Library is expecting to receive many proposals for the full LSTA grants - due on May 1st. I have heard from numerous librarians about the need for fundraising and grant writing workshops. The Grantsmanship Center located in Los Angeles will present their very popular five-day Grantsmanship Training Program in Akron from June 1-5 and in Cleveland from August 10-14. Participants will move step-by-step through all the stages of planning programs, locating funding sources, and writing grant proposals. You will learn how to find grants from foundations, corporations, and all levels of government. You will work with other participants in small groups, developing proposal elements, reviewing proposals, and developing a complete grant proposal, from start to finish. Each proposal writing project is a real one, and is focused on the needs of organizations attending this workshop.

Their three-day Grant Proposal Writing workshop is recommended for those who wish to hone their proposal writing skills in the shortest period of time, and who already know where to apply for a grant. It will be held from May 27-29 at Loretto, PA which is about 140 miles from Warren.

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is accepting reservations for their Grant Center Basic Orientation session on May 11th at 9:30 a.m. It is free and open to representatives from nonprofit organizations seeking information on funding sources and fund raising. The Main Library is a cooperating collection library for the Foundation Center of New York City.

Funding Resources: The Online Librarian

The Foundation Center, located in New York City, has developed an electronic reference service to respond to your need for factual information about foundations, philanthropy, and other issues related to nonprofits, and to assist you with fundraising research.

Networks Heaven - Networld+Interop 98

Its that time again, and I'm attending Networld+Interop, the largest show of its kind dedicated to all things networked. Sunday was registration; imagine walking to the badge holder booth and passing a semi full of Sun Ultra stations and NT servers from Intergraph. If I could drive one of those things . . .

The heart of this show is an experimental/show tested network called the InteropNet donated by all of the major vendors. Every aisle has a conduit running through the ceiling that is known as "The Pink". The Pink is a military grade fiber with easy connector ends capable of delivering in excess of 1000MB. Whoa! The NOC is comprised of nearly 40 volunteers who make just about every protocol under the sun talk to every other protocol. Included are ATM, Gigabit Ethernet, v6 IP, IP multicast and more.

Today, I attend day one of a two day Unix network server class. This will be invaluable as most of the ILL Virtual solutions are based on a Unix core. I will also be attending several Windows NT 5 classes and workshops that I hope to bring back for a NOLA session.

Oh yeah, there's gambling here too. . .
