From the Field - Kenneth Bell

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Well, Hunter S. Thompson isn't here, but every possible technology company is. After class, I headed to the exhibition hall and was again blown away by the "bigger, better, booth" syndrome. Some things I saw:

  • Wireless LAN products are beginning to heat up.
  • Microsoft's new NetShow Theatre (I got a beta CD, just released). This is great streaming video technology. The possibilities for training are awesome.
  • A multipoint classroom technology that will operate efficiently over the T1. Now everyone can take NOLA classes without the drive time.
  • Several technology book vendors. The Chilton's of the 90s, these books just cost so much that any coop deals we can arrange have to be cool!

By the time you see this it will be tomorrow, but as you might imagine, my schedule has become quite strange. This thing keeps me up at night.

In the Real World, We Call Them Libraries

In what appears to be a trend, there is a real shakeout in search engine gateways; known as portals. These entryways that are the default homepages set when a browser is first installed, often don't get changed by the end user. This gives the vendors of these pages an enormous audience for advertising, etc. Netscape just announced an exclusive partnership with Excite in hopes of rivalling competitor and dominant search engine; Yahoo. Read the story.
