Digital Cameras Getting Cheaper, Better

Known as megapixel cameras, the new crop is becoming cost affordable while still maintaining a high image quality. Read the story. Also visit ZDNet's Camera User site for more info.

New Copyright Bill Drawing Library Fire

The senate overwhelmingly voted to approve the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a bill that would implement two copyright treaties adopted in 1996 by the United Nations' World Intellectual Property Organization to cover property rights over written material, sound recordings and software in the online world. Libraries are concerned about the restriction/elimination of "fair use". Visit the Digital Future Coalition for a critical viewpoint. Read the story.

The NOLA Update - Judi Burdette

Do You Remember?

Remember the NOLA Pen Pal Project?
Remember the John Cotton Dana Award?
Remember the first Pen Pal Party at Pioneer Waterland in September 1992?

Well, if you have forgotten any details, you can refresh your memory.  Donna Fried, a contributing editor for the ALA publication, Public Libraries, wrote an article entitled "Cooperation Among Small Libraries Creates Successful Pen Pal Project" which appears in the March/April 1998 issue. Donna is the Branch Manager of Bainbridge Library, Geauga County Public Library System.

What Donna does not say is that she was the public children's librarian that sparked this wonderful project. Additionally, the Pen Pal Project has led to a total of six wonderful summer reading finales at the water park sponsored by NOLA Regional Library System for thousands of children and their families in the nine-county area served by NOLA.

Regional Library Systems Study

Himmel & Wilson, Library Consultants, have been commissioned by the State Library to conduct a study of Ohio's Regional Library Systems. The consultants have been gathering data through community forums held in various parts of the state, including Newton Falls Public Library and Burton Public Library, and through phone and personal interviews.

On June 10, 1998, the consultants will conduct a meeting which will provide the Ohio library community with preliminary results of their study. In addition to a presentation of the results, the consultants are interested in feedback concerning their fundings.

Anyone interested in the findings of this study is invited to attend this meeting to be held in Columbus at 1:00 p.m. If you plan to attend, please contact Donna Popovich at [email protected].
