E-Rate Continuance Debated With Clinton and Kennard speaking out in favor of the program, some lawmakers are urging for the demise of the school and library wiring program. Worse, some tech. opinion makers are starting to agree. Here is a synopsis of the current issues. Four lawmakers (Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), Rep. Thomas J. Bliley Jr. (R-Va.), Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-S.C.) sent a letter to Kennard last week, asking him to suspend the program. "We believe it is too late for the commission to rescue itself merely by tinkering with a fundamentally flawed and legally suspect program." An article in the Washington Post summarizes the opposition. The program has already collected $625 million dollars from telcos but has not disbursed any of the money yet. A vote is expected this week at the FCC on what action to take. Read a Wired News story on the situation. The New York Times reported that a possible deal is in the works (requires registration). MSNBC has a pretty broad wrap-up on the program, including a quick poll concerning views on the subsidies. Items submitted by:
