An Update on the Statewide Resource Sharing Committee

In late 1997, the State Library of Ohio http://winslo.ohio.gov/ , in cooperation with OPLIN http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/   and the Ohio Library Council, announced a planning effort to establish a statewide resource sharing and document delivery for Ohio's public and school libraries. A Steering Committee and four task forces were formed - Technology, Policy, Delivery, and Funding & Management - to develop a plan by late summer. State Librarian Michael Lucus established a short timeline for the project in an effort to include any possible funding request from the state legislature in the next budget request that is due in Sepember.

For minutes of the Steering Committee and Task Force meetings, click on http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/ABOUT/committees.html and scroll down to Statewide Resource Sharing Task Forces. The next Steering Committee will be held on July 1, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. at the OPLIN office in Columbus, Ohio.

Ken Bell, the Technology Consultant for NOLA, is also consulting with the State Library on this project and has written "Innovative Statewide Resource Sharing Projects: A Review of the Current Landscape http://www.nolanet.org/report/ ." This report provides information on the current state of resource sharing in libraries from a statewide or State Library driven perspective, focusing on the public library component.

NOLA will continue to keep you posted this summer concerning this Statewide Resource Sharing and Delivery planning process.

One Year Positions Approved By NOLA Board

On Tuesday, June 16, 1998, the NOLA Board approved my recommendation for filling the staff vacancy created when Sue Nespeca resigned. In the long range planning process completed this past spring, members identified commitments to: providing a quality youth service program, streamlining the continuing education program, providing quality consulting services, improving our marketing plan, and continuing to be leaders in the development and use of new technologies. Therefore, instead of hiring a Deputy Director, we will hire persons for the following one-year positions: Youth Services Coordinator (900 hours per year); Marketing/Public Relations (506 hours per year); Continuing Education Consultant (1040 hours per year); and a Technology Intern (approximately 443 hours per year).

Next June NOLA will have additional information concerning state funding for Regional Library Systems and will reexamine what we want to do with staffing. Feel free to contact me at [email protected]   or Mary Frances Burns, the Board President, at [email protected]  if you have any questions.

Debate Temporarily Dormant

The debate over the E-rate is in limbo at present. Read an article on what some schools are doing in the meantime. Also, an organization has formed made up of mostly school folks to fight cuts in the program.
