NOLA Summer/Fall Continuing Education Calendar Online

After much work by NOLA staff, we are pleased to announce the new CE calendar is now online. This is a milestone as we are now using an advanced database to web technology to present this information. The dbase concept allows us to sort events by category and allow you to register electronically. There are a number of other neat abilities this will provide us. For instance, we are programming a routine that will cause the database to automatically email a reminder 7 days prior to the event, saving manpower and telecommunications costs. There are still some pieces that are being worked on, such as getting all of the school members entered into the database, but by and large, the solution is up and available. Happy learning!

One other thing; this technology is important to you because there are a ton of uses in the library for database presentation. The primary need will be in local collection presentation on the web. Static web pages are fine for a few items, but when you start putting hundreds or thousands of letters or photos online, a database technology is a natural solution.

TIC Moving Forward

The Technology Initiative Committee group leads met in conjunction with the Technology Advocacy Committee recently to kickoff the beginning of TIC group creation. We have successfully re-implemented the News group server and are ready to begin. If you visit the TIC homepage, you will find updates about this interesting project. In a nutshell, the TIC aims to help you folks find a structured opportunity to network on technology issues and leave footprints for others to follow. More to come. . .

I'll Have Mine Rare

We all know about Bill Gates interest in libraries and scholarly works. You might remember he was the one who plunked down nearly 31 million dollars for some of Da Vinci's illustrations and notes. But it turns out other computer company moguls have similar interests. John Warnock from Adobe has started a company dedicated to digitizing rare and ancient texts. Read the Story.
