Library Leadership 2000

NOLA was one of the first sponsors of Ohio's Library Leadership 2000 when it was developed in 1993.  Once again, we are a sponsor for this fall's LL2000, a five-day residential, experiential program of leadership training held at the Inn at Honey Run in Holmes County.   We just received a list of the thirty persons selected for the 1998 program and we are pleased to announce that two NOLA librarians will be included - Gretchen Persohn from Carnegie Public Library in East Liverpool and Beverly Willis with the Rootstown Local School District .  Congratulations.

LSTA Mini Grants

The State Library of Ohio announced on July 14th that there will be LSTA Mini Grants available in 1999.  Information will be released on their web site in August.  There is a fall deadline for the submission of these grants.  This past spring the State Library was only able to fund 40% of the grant applications that they received.  We will keep our members posted when we receive additonal information.

Reference Backup Service

At the July 14, 1998 State Library Board meeting, it was announced that the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County will provide reference backup for all libraries in Ohio.  They will develop a brochure with information about contacting them with reference questions.  We will send you additional information as soon as NOLA receives it.  Please do NOT contact them before the date when the service will begin - it will be announced soon.

Basic Reference Workshops

The State Library also announced that the Ohio Library Council will develop a Basic Reference Workshop and will hold it in all parts of the state.  OLC is hiring a person to do this training.  They will be publicizing it and will tell all libraries how to register.

Medical Reference Backup Service Provided by NOLA

The NOLA Regional Library System has contracted with the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine's Oliver Ocasek Regional Medical Information Center to provide member libraries with medical reference backup service.  Instructions will be sent to directors of all member libraries on July 20, 1998.

E-Rate Gets Tentative Roll-out Approval

With the current congress running short on time, it looks like the re-organized Universal Service program known as the E-Rate is going to proceed. Under Commissioner William Kennard, the FCC has required the corporations administering the plan to consolidate, cut back on the amount that will be collected and disbursed (1.3Billion vs. 2.25) and answered critics on what services are covered (no carpeting <grin>). While this is likely not the end, at least the first round applicants need not worry they wasted their time and the Commerce Committee of the Senate has no more E-Rate hearings scheduled.  Read the Story.
