From the Field - Kenneth Bell

Kids Online/PreText Offline

I had not visited PreText in awhile and when I did, I found an interesting issue concerning children and the Internet. But, I also saw that this was the May Issue, perhaps signaling the 'zine's impending death.

The Internet Inquisition

According to the website "InQuizit is the first intelligent software that interprets the meaning and concepts of plain English". As yet, it is hard to tell, the search engine isn't on the site, yet. Read the story.

See you on September 15th?

Time is running out. There is only a few days left for you and your staff to register for the September 15th First Quarter Membership Council Meeting. Please spread the word. If you are not there, you will miss hearing Paula Miller, a dynamite speaker. The theme for the Quarterly Meetings this year is Tomorrow's Trends / Today's Libraries. See you there?

Check out OLC's ACCESS

Ken Bell, our Technology Consultant, has written an article published in the July/August issue of Ohio Library Council's ACCESS (p. 10) concerning NOLA's new Digital Collection Service Center. Check it out.

NOLA Open House

Mark your calendar today. Save November 17th - NOLA is planning an afternoon Open House to show off our renovated Conference and Training Center. We have added an office for our Technology Coordinator, a Digital Collection Service Center, a doorway into the office, and an ADA compliant restroom. During September we are also going to have the office painted. Come see. You are always welcome.

Trial Membership

The NOLA Board recently approved a plan to offer a free three month trial membership to area libraries that are not currently members. Next week we will be contacting the first five libraries. Increasing the number of libraries participating in NOLA is included in our new NOLA Strategic Plan 1998 - 2001. And once again, I want to thank everyone who participated in any way in that planning process.

Continuing Education Needs Assessment

Our new CE Consultant, Lori Putt, invites NOLA library directors to participate in a continuing education needs assessment.  In a nutshell, what she really wants is input from you concerning your needs for professional development programs or technology training workshops. Join her in our NOLA Conference and Training Center on October 20th from 12:15 - 1:30 pm. We will supply the pizza - you supply the ideas. Please e-mail me by October 13th if you can participate. If you can join us, feel free to come to the Board Meeting at 10:00 am. All members are always welcome.

Lori is currently developing a CE survey that will be on The Desktop soon and she will be attending several NOLA meetings and talking with different groups of members concerning continuing education.
