Feeling Secure

A link to a nice page concerning workstation security is available here. Prepared by a Reference Librarian, the site covers issues such as hardware security, software security and menuing programs.

Teletubbies and Baby Brains

I don't know why, but I once sat through an entire episode of the Teletubbies. This article is about how infants learn.

America Links Up and Internet Teach-Ins

The program kicked off yesterday and runs through the school year. It will include events in local libraries, schools and community centers across the country. Alos available is a nice resource site for parents and kids. ALA is a co-sponsor of the event. If you are planning on holding a local event, you can register it here. Currently, 9 Ohio libraries are listed with events.

The Digital State

Every year, the Progress and Freedom Foundation prepares a report on the digital readiness of state government in areas of regulation, taxation, education and law enforcement. One significant statistic was a 40% year over year, across the board improvement in state govt. usage of technology. Currently, Ohio ranks 21st overall, though we did tie for first in the K12 area.

New Weekly Column

I look forward to communicating with everyone on a weekly basis through the Desktop News! I officially began my duties with NOLA Regional Library on September 1st and am having a great time sifting through an enormous amount of paperwork to bring you the most up to the minute continuing education offerings that will be available in 1999.

This week, you will find our Continuing Education Survey for 1998 posted on the website for your completion. I have also reviewed last year's survey that you completed in December and will utilize the information from both surveys to determine what the needs of our members are for the coming two years.

As Continuing Education Consultant, I also believe that you can learn something new each day...and my plans are to share with you some tidbits of knowledge each week in the form of "Quotes of the Week".

Don't you look forward to driving past the churches that put quotes on their marquees each week? I do...hopefully you'll look forward to my bits of past wisdom as well!

Quote of the Week:
"I am the world's worst salesman, therefore, I must make it easy for people to buy."
F. W. Woolworth, 1888

Our plan is to make our continuing education courses "easy for you to buy". I hope we're only half as successful as Mr. Woolworth was in his business!

See you next week!
