From the Field - Kenneth Bell

How Clever

IBM researchers have developed a software algorithm to automate the process of finding the most authoritative Web pages by analyzing both the actual links in Web pages and the immediate words surrounding the link. The technology is code-named "Clever" and IBM says that at this point they have no intentions to create another portal, but instead hope to market the technology to the big search engines themselves. Read the story.

ArtLex

ArtLex is a dictionary of visual art with definitions for more than 2,600 terms. Areas covered include art production, criticism, history, aesthetics, and education.

I'll Show You Mine . . .

Bookmark Central is a great idea for organizing information. Information professionals can gain "by sharing hard-won URLs to sites rich with content." While not a huge repository at present, the idea has merit. Also visit the Reflinks project to find Information professionals (librarians) classifying good sites according to DDC.

New Names, Same Issues

Beyond Information Retrieval: Ways to Provide Content in Context is a good article concerning current state of the art in online services and search engines. Focusing on the concept of moving past citations to full text information, the author postulates that the search engines might have an advantage over traditional companies. An evergrowing opinion that it doesn't matter if a service provides one million or a hundred million results is driving the industry towards "editorial context". I was always fascinated with a company called The Mining Co. to provide context.

Just Pass Go

Disney and Infoseek team up to provide yet another portal site. Hoping to cash in on the Disney brand and establish the company in the digital realm, the new site will be a Disney brand with the Infoseek search technology bundled inside. The Infoseek portal will cease to exist. Read the story.
