Education Station - Lori Putt/CE Consultant

Serving the Underserved

All of us want to provide services to as many residents of our community as we can, right? Some populations or groups are easier to identify than others, so
we seem to develop programs to serve them. But there are other groups of people, "the underserved" that need our library services, but we may not have
identified them or found a way to effectively reach them.

"Customers deserve the very best. It would be helpful if everyone in business could, to paraphrase the American Indian expression, "Walk a mile in their customer's moccasins".

I once asked a man pumping gas at a filling station why his station was always so busy while the one across the street selling comparable gas at an identical price was almost always empty. This sage businessman replied, "They're in a different business than us - They're a fillin' station -- we're a service station."
Norman Augustine, Chairman, Martin Marietta Corp.

We need to find ways to "service" these groups of underserved customers, but first you have to identify who they are for your library. Once identified, you
need to come up with a plan to market your library services to them. Find out what their needs are...walk a mile in their moccasins!

To learn more about serving the underserved populations in your library service area, you can register for NOLA's upcoming one-day seminar, "Underserved
Populations: Who Are They & How Do We Reach Them?
", to be held at the NOLA Training Center on October 27th from 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

An excellent seminar for Adult Services, Directors, and any staff member who may be wanting to start any new programming for senior citizens, the
handicapped, or other underserved residents of your service area.

Continuing Education Survey

Don't forget to complete our 1998 CE Survey online...please also alert your staff to complete the survey before Monday, October 12th! Results will be
provided to you by the end of October and we will use this information in planning our 1999 Continuing Education programs.
