Homeschoolers and Libraries

There are currently 1.23 million home schooled children in America. According to statistics, http://www.hslda.org/central/statsandreports/ray1997/03.stm, this means there are more home schooled children nationwide than there are public school students in the states of Wyoming, Vermont, Delaware, North Dakota, Alaska, South Dakota, Rhode Island, Montana and Hawaii combined. So if you feel the number of home schooled children using your library is increasing, you are probably correct.

An Ohioan, Sue Scheps from Bertram Woods Branch, Shaker Heights, has updated a booklet published by the Public Library Association in 1993 on home schooled children. In addition to revising information, coverage was increased to book form and is now released by the American Library Association. Titled “The Librarian’s Guide to Home schooling Resources” (ALA, 1998), Sue personally told me that ALA informed her the book is selling quickly - over 800 copies in two months. Obviously, libraries across the country were hungry for such a resource. Chapters include: potential problems in serving homeschoolers, staff bias against
homeschoolers, censorship and materials purchasing, what homeschoolers want from public libraries, home schooling laws, sample programs and services, national home schooling organizations, state and regional organizations, correspondence schools, publishers and distributors of home schooling resources, homeschooling periodicals, and a bibliography of articles, books and web sites. One of my favorite web sites is by the Home Education Press and can be found at http://www.home-ed-press.com

I was quite impressed to see Kinsman Public Library’s web page on home schooling resources. http://www.kinsman.lib.oh.us/teachers.htm Check
out their site for many other links and useful information. You might want to include a similar section on your library’s web page.

Children’s Book Week

It is less than a week until youth services librarians engage in one of their busiest programming weeks of the year. At my library, Lima Public, http://www.lima.lib.oh.us, we are emphasizing family programming. In addition to a special family storytime of twisted folktales and songs, we are encouraging families to complete book bingo (by reading several books together) and then being invited to a special magic show. Also during the week, we will have an online book trivia quiz - one for younger readers and the other for older readers with prizes for all those who answer questions correctly. Check it out for fun and see how
many questions you can answer. We are also sponsoring illustrator/author Chris Soentpiet (Silver Packages, More than Anything Else, and many more) for both the public and two programs for local school children.

What are your library’s plans for Children’s Book Week? Please share your ideas on the NOLA youth services listserv ( just send to [email protected]). It may help the rest of us plan activities for National Library Week!

Did you check out the Children’s Book Council site this year? (sponsors of Children’s Book Week). http://www.cbcbooks.org This is a site you will want to bookmark for it is loaded with useful information such as: planning theme classes or special exhibits at libraries, a sneak peek at publishers picks for the newest bestsellers, 13 Exciting Reading Activities for Children, author and illustrator links, author and illustrator visits, etc. Recommend this site to your local school teachers too.

Inclement Weather Cancellations

Don't Let it snow , let it snow!!  The colder weather is upon us and it will be important for participants to know if a workshop has been cancelled due to weather conditions.  Between the the months of November and March members can choose extension 12 on the voice mail system for the most recent cancellation information.  The voice mail will be updated by 7:00 AM on the day of the workshop.

CUSTOMIZING THE TOOLBARS IN MICROSOFT OFFICE

Did you know that you could add additional toolbar buttons to the existing toolbar in any Microsoft Office product.  To do so go to the View menu and choose Toolbar, and Customize and then the Commands Tab.  Locate the Category (menu choice) on the left side of the dialog box and you will see the buttons on the right under the Commands.   Simply place your mouse on top of the button of your choice and hold down the mouse button and drag the toolbar button to the toolbar on the top of the window and place the mouse arrow between two other toolbar buttons and let go of the mouse button.  Your new button will then appear.

Don't forget to sign up for the Excel intermediate class for more time saving techniques.  To register http://www.nolanet.org/cfdocs/eventdetail.cfm?EventID=16
