Legislative Breakfast Scheduled - Mark Your Calendar

The Legislative Committee is planning a NOLA Legislative Breakfast to be held on Wednesday, March 10, 1999, in Columbus. You will have the opportunity to meet with your state representatives and senators. One of the topics we will be discussing with them will be increased state funding for Ohio's Regional Library Systems. Mark your 1999 calendars now and the Committee will be sending you more information in January. March 10th is OLC Legislative Day.

Director Will Return to Office on December 16th

I will be on vacation next week and then will be attending the American Society of Association Executives' Management & Technology Conference in Washington, DC. On December 16th I will try to contact anyone who left a voice mail message for me. I am taking my laptop with me and will respond to e-mail messages.

NOLA Board Meeting

The NOLA Board will meet on Thursday, December 17, 1998 from 10:00 a.m. - Noon. This meeting will be held at the Welshfield Inn in Welshfield, Ohio. All members are encouraged to attend and will be welcomed.

A Word from OLC

The Ohio Library Council held its annual Leadership Conference last week in Akron. On Tuesday evening before the conference began, the OLC Board of Directors met for a regular meeting.

The Board welcomed Janice Ridgeway, from Cuyahoga County Public Library, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Bescye Burnett who resigned from the Board. Bescye has moved to Michigan to direct a public library there. Also, Holly Carroll, incoming vice-president/president-elect was in attendance.

Topics of discussion included the evaluation of the Executive Director, Regional Library Systems, the 1999 Legislative Plank, and the 1999 budget. Of major interest is the statewide survey commissioned by OLC that will take place later this month. OLC hopes to have the results of the survey available for use during the 1999 budget process. The results will be shared with the Ohio library community, as well as state legislators.

HOT Holiday Gifts

Well the votes are in, and this holiday season’s top toys for kids have been recorded. According to a Knight Ridder Newspaper wire and Toy Manufacturers of America’s Top Selling Toys, the following are very hot: Furby, Sing Along Blue, Teletubbies and Rugrats dolls. (As if youth services librarians could not already guess - just by the number of requests for books on these characters.)

Here are the toys - where to buy them - their web site(s) - and of course, the books libraries can purchase to go along with the popular characters. And then, just sat back and watch the books disappear from the shelves - of course, they will never be in!

Furby

Many of you probably heard the horror stories that occurred the day after Thanksgiving when lines of people crushed the stores trying to get a Furby - which were sold out as soon as the doors opened. What is it about this computerized virtual pet from Hasbro who speaks his own language that makes it the number one toy this year? Is it possible to get a Furby? Definitely difficult, but the web does offer some possibilities.

Go to http://www.buyfurby.com and place a reservation for a Furby. 6,000 reservations will be accepted and a shipment is supposedly on the way. Or try http://www.Furbytoys.com (the “unofficial” Furby Family Web Site) for a list of stores across the United States that are selling Furbys. Also go to the biggest toy store on the web (where you can order all the toys you need for the holidays) at http://www.eToys.com and enter the Furby-A-Day Sweepstakes Giveaway if you feel lucky. (By the way, all the other toys mentioned below are also available from eToys.com.)

Books? - no Furby books yet.....

Sing Along Blue

Yes, this is the popular dog from the Blue’s Clue Nickelodeon TV series. Press her right paw, and hear the show’s theme song. Knight Ridder states that Sing Along Blue is selling six times the rate of Tickle Me Elmo dolls did previously.

If you can’t find Sing Along Blue, why not purchase a Blue’s Clues Game? This can be ordered directly from the book and CD people, Amazon.com, or at eToys.com. The board game is for 2 to 4 players and yes, you must solve clues. Or, try any of the other toys from eToys including: Blue’s Clues TV Play-Along Kit; Little Blue stuffed animal; Blues’ Clues Playboard; Blue’s Clues Playscene; Blue’s Clues Big Easy Game; or Blue’s Clues Ten-Piece Floor Puzzle, a suitable puzzle for the library too. Recently I purchased a three-foot tall Blue’s Clues Stuffed Animal for my library which the kids love. Only $99
from Demco.

Books for Your Library:

Blue’s Big Birthday. Angela Santomero. Simon Spotlight. ISBN: 0689821514

Teletubbies

Here are my two favorite teletubbie sites: http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Studio/8014 OR http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/teletubbies/gallery

Talking teletubbies are everywhere and are hot sellers for Hasbro due to their own PBS show. But other teletubbie toys abound at eToys. There are floor puzzles, playboards, nontalking teletubbies by Eden, and bean bag dolls.

Books abound:

Here Come Teletubbies. Scholastic. ISBN: 0590386239

Teletubbies Play Hide-And-Seek! (Flap Book). Dana Thompson. Scholastic. ISBN: 0590386174

The Little Puffy Cloud. (Board Book) Scholastic. ISBN: 0590643207.

The Magic String. (Board Book). Scholastic. ISBN: 0590643215

Teletubbies Like to Dance! (Board Book) Dana Thompson. Scholastic. ISBN: 0590386212

Rugrats

In a previous message, I sent two web sites - one for the Rugrats Movie, and the other for the Rugrats TV show - along with a list of books to buy for your
library. The Rugrats Dolls available from Mattel are expected to be big sellers due to the movie.

Have fun shopping - for the toys and for your library books!

CyberStuff from Reflinks

Once again the joyous holiday season is upon us. The tinkle of sleigh bells, the smell of fresh baked gingerbread, the festive gleam of dancing lights...ahhh! And to every librarian's ear, the one True sound of Christmas.   "You got any books on countries? I gotta know what they do for Christmas. Oh yeah, and I need food too."  In the past, thoughts of militant sugarplums descending upon the assigning teacher have always brought a twinkle to the eye, but not this year. Away with gritted teeth and plastic smile, as you inform the 22nd child to make the request, that those 4 books are out. No longer must you hold the phone 2 feet from your ear as an irate parent squeals, "It's due tomorrow, what am I gonna do!" Rejoice! because, boy, do we have the perfect gift for you!  The Reflinks elves have searched, far and wide, for the best holiday sites on the net. Check the Social Sciences for Christmas Around The World - a stocking full of: info by country, the origins of Christmas, Santa Clause legends, Christmas symbolism, music, recipes and more. Need more? Try Festivals.com - world celebrations at your keyboard-tips. A built in search engine makes it easy! Your patrons will be amazed! Demonstrate the sites on your OPLIN computer! If they have a computer, send the URL's home! (Do remind them, this time of year this site gets REAL busy!)  So, sit back and have a nice cup of cocoa, secure in the knowledge that, YOU have the power to restore holiday happiness to parents and children everywhere! (At least until the report is due.) And who knows, This could bag you some "Thank You!" cookies. Yum!
