CyberStuff from Reflinks

Christmas is coming! The goose is getting fat! What goes best with goose? If we're eating goose, should I decorate the door wreath with one? Maybe the kids could make a goose ornament for the tree... The people at Christmas with Reader's Digest want to help you get all your geese in order this holiday season. Visit this site for traditional and contemporary holiday tales, craft & decorating ideas, recipes and more. Pop into the Holiday Forum to share tips, recipes and memories with others online. Countdown the days to Christmas (and scare yourself 'cause you haven't started shopping yet!). This is a commercial site, so expect commercials, and promos, and giveaways. But hey, maybe you'll find something for Great-Aunt Helga...

Encyclopedia Online

I just returned today from an OPLIN committee meeting and wanted to share one of the exciting things I learned. There is now an encyclopedia online that can be accessed through the web at no cost. Not only can you bookmark this on library computers, but you can recommend it to families when they quiz you about purchasing an encyclopedia set. Why not suggest that if they have a home computer, instead of spending hundreds for a print copy, they simply access this online? Funk& Wagnalls Encyclopedia can be found at: http://www.funkandwagnalls.com

In addition to the Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia, you can also find several other things at this site. Included is the Random House Webster's College Dictionary, and continually updated news from Reuters. And the graphics are fantastic - there are pictures and maps and sound and music.

You can access each of the above by themselves ( encyclopedia, dictionary, Reuters world news or the media index) or you can enter a subject and do a "power search" which will check all of them at once. There are also links to the web. Funk & Wagnalls is owned by Versabook - and they call themselves the Library of the 21st Century. We can certainly thank them for providing this for free!

Oh, by the way, you can also win a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond for your child's education if you want.....

Furby - Part 2

It's particularly nice to know that someone is reading my weekly column since there have been times I spent several hours preparing them. One way I know this is because people continually point out mistakes that I make. Hmmm.... Like I said- at least someone is reading them.

It turns out that I was wrong - there is a book on Furbys. (Can Furbys be plural????) Now whether I will buy this for my library remains to be seen. My fine staff broke down and bought Teletubbies and Rugrat books - but Furby? Here is the site - I have not seen the book, so decide for yourself.
