Education vs. Understanding
What's the difference between education and understanding? Is it important always to be
educated; or in some circumstances can an understanding be sufficient?
This is why we developed our first continuing education program for 1999: Everything
you Wanted to Know About Networking...But Were Afraid to Ask... We know that not
everyone needs to be completely educated in computer networking...but many of you do need
to "understand" the workings of a computer
network!
Consider these "words of wisdom":
On Education:
"To know every detail, to gain an insight into each secret, to learn every
method, to secure every kind of skill, are the prime necessities in every art, craft,
or business"
Hamilton Wright Mabie
On Understanding:
"Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood."
Marie Curie
How wise these words of Marie Curie were so many years ago; and they still ring true
today! You don't need to be a "computer expert" - many of you just need to
"understand" that terminology and the how's and why's of networking so that you
can communicate properly with your staff! If you need this "understanding", you
won't want to miss 1999's first NOLA Continuing Education workshop: Everything You
Wanted to Know About Networking...But Were Afraid to Ask! Join Brad Stephens for
this day-long program, were you will learn how computer networking happens--the concepts,
issues, terminology and trends--plus hardware
and software basics!
CE Catalogs Are Here...CE Catalogs are Here!
We are sending out to all of our members, friends, Romans, and Neighbors this week our
1999 Continuing Education catalog. We are sending additional copies to
each of our member libraries, in the hopes that these extra copies will get into the hands
of each staff person who can benefit from additional training! Please
distribute the catalogs to each department within your library. If you need more copies,
please e-mail Melissa Lattanzi at [email protected] and we would be
happy to send additional copies for distribution.
You will also receive this week a copy of the "Business Breakthroughs" brochure,
which is our corporate training program brochure that is being sent to area
businesses, non-profits, and government agencies. We are sending this to you for
informational purposes only...in case you receive questions about it, you will have
the brochure as a reference tool. If you have any questions about "Business
Breakthroughs", please e-mail Lori Putt, CE Consultant at
[email protected].

Congratulations!
The NOLA staff would like to offer a special congratulations both the Morley and Kirtland Public Libraries for being
named among the best libraries in the country in the current issue of American Libraries.
Around the world in a few seconds
You're all familiar with "domestic" domain names that end with .com or
.edu but what about those from other countries (such as those that end with .bb or .no).
These names exist and are starting to appear more frequently on the web. If you want to be
in know about about all things Internet check out Domain Name Registries around the world.

NOLA Librarians Making News
Ellen Leavitt has just been appointed Assistant Director of the Geauga County Public
Library. She comes to the position from a background in Youth Services and, most recently,
was Assistant Manager of Technical and Computer Services at GCPL. The former Assistant
Director, Greg Lubelski, is now the Director of the Erie (PA) Public Library. He was a
NOLA Board member and served as Vice President/President Elect during 1997-98.
The Ashland Public Library has just named Pam Jordan as their new Director. Pam is a
graduate of Ohio's Library Leadership 2000 and she has worked for several years at the
Westlake Porter Public Library with Director Paula Miller who was our Fall Quarterly
Membership Meeting speaker.
NOLA is happy to share good news about appointments and promotions with our members. We
use information that comes from the Director, the library Board, the PR Director, the
person being appointed, or newsletters/newspapers. I encourage you to fax information to
the office or e-mail me.
Web Book by Brad Stephens and Gail Junion-Metz Is Published
We are pleased to share some great news with you -- Gail Junion-Metz, a trainer whom NOLA
uses on a regular basis, and Brad Stephens, NOLA's Technology Coordinator, have authored a
new book about developing a "Power Web Site." NOLA will purchase the book for
our Professional Development Collection this week. Below is a brief summary.
Congratulations Brad and Gail.
"Creating a Power Web Site: HTML, Tables, Imagemaps, and Forms"
by: Gail Junion-Metz and Brad Stephens
Neal-Schuman Publishers, New York, NY 1998
Creating a Power Website is designed to help librarians learn the techniques and skills
they need to upgrade their websites as quickly as and as easily as possible. Many of the
sections and examples focus on developing "web-based" versions of common library
services such as Interlibrary Loan Request forms and registering for a library card. Once
you become familiar with the issues and technologies in bringing library services to the
web you'll be well on your way to developing a "Power Website"
Transforming Ourselves for the Future
We hope to see more library staff at NOLA's
Quarterly Membership Meetings - everyone is always welcome. On February 16th Maureen
Sullivan will lead a program on "The New 3Rs - Retooling, Retraining, Revitalizing:
Transforming Ourselves for the Future" at Leo's Ristorante. You will learn practical
strategies for preparing yourself to assume new roles and responsibilities and for leading
change in your library. Maureen is a librarian and a dynamic organizational development
consultant. She is super - register today so you won't miss this opportunity. What a
bargain - only $12.00.
Mark Your Calendar Today - Legislative Breakfast is on March 11th
NOLA is planning a Legislative Breakfast on March 11th at the Capital Cafe in Columbus for
members and area legislators. We will send a packet of information to public library
directors on January 25th. Last year's breakfast was very successful and a number of
legislators met with our members to discuss library issues. You will be able to register
online soon.

Tomb it may concern,
The Ohio Reflinks Project received your genealogy querie regarding the interment site of
your Pharaonic ancestor. We suggest you visit the sites at 929 - Genealogy, names, insignia. Sites
there include "Cemetery, Tombstone, Graveyard, Burial, Interment, and Genealogy
Records", "Royal and Noble Genealogical Data on the Web" and "Cyndi's
List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet".
Alternatively, 932 - Egypt to 640
may supply clues to his tomb's location. Peer amid these websites to sift for information.
And remember, it is often helpful to talk to relatives for genealogical information. Did
you ask your mummy?

Sew Me a Story!
Thanks to Terri Lawless from Garrettsville Library (Portage County District Library) for
the following information.
"Sew Me A Story - A Cloth Doll Challenge!" was a contest sponsored by the Doll
Net Gallery. The challenge was to create a cloth doll of a favorite character from
children's literature. The pupose of the challenge was to promote literacy and the love of
reading in young children. Now there is a travelling exhibit of the dolls that is free to
public libraries throughout the United States. There are over 40 dolls including:
Alexander, the Cheshire Cat, Babushka, Mother Goose, Dorrie the Witch, Little Prince, Flat
Stanley Peter, Heckedy Peg, Pippi, Laura Ingalls, Uncle Wiggly, and Red Riding Hood among
others. For pictures of all the dolls and information concerning the challenge visit the Doll Net Gallery.
Garrettsville Library will be a host to the exhibit during the month of January. You can
check out the rest of the schedule online though Garrettsville is the only Ohio site.
