From the Field - Brad Stephens

Pentium III to debut

Intel will debut the new Pentium III processor by the end of this month. This new processor will intially support clock speeds of up to 500 MHz, with a 600 MHz version planned for the end of the year. The new chip adds a number of new features one of which has been the subject of much controversy. The new chip will have a unique serial number imbedded that will be accessible, with the users knowledge, to ecommerce sites when using the web. This serial number is designed to enhance security by acting like a license plate allowing on-line retailers to identify a particular computer involved in any transaction. Privacy advocates have expressed strong concerns about the impact of this new "feature" on the privacy of computer users. A recent development that will strengthen the argument against the serial number is the development of a computer program that can read the serial number from a Pentium III processor without the knowledge of the user.
