Kids Connect - Sue McCleaf Nespeca, Youth Services Consultant

Recently a librarian asked me for suggestions for pamphlets for parents on the importance of reading to children at an early age. The library wished to distribute them from a library van conducting outreach services. Most of my materials in my files were outdated and no longer available. I did a search and came up with some items that I would also like to order. I thought I would share this with you.

1. "Helping Your Child Learn to Read." From the U.S. Department of Education, Consumer Information Catalog, Pueblo, CO.
http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/other/o-child.htm

2. "Raising a Reader: Raising a Writer." From the National Association for the Education of Young Children. http://www.naeyc.org/catalog/catalog_index.htm
Then go to: New Brochures.

3. "Get Ready to Read! Tips for Parents of Young Children." http://bookstore.reading.org/ Then go to "For Parents" followed by "Helping Your Young Child With Reading."

4. "Choosing A Child's Book" and "13 Exciting Reading Activities for Children." http://www.cbcbooks.org/navigation/parindex.htm Then go to CBC publications.

5. "Beginning With Books..." Available for 50 cents each or $40/100 from Beginning With Books; The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh; Homewood Branch; 7101 Hamilton Avenue; Pittsburgh,
PA. 15208.

From the Field - Brad Stephens

Amazon Sees a Challenge in the Cornfields of Iowa

A small Internet book seller has caused some to question the value of large on-line book sellers like Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com. Positively-You.com offers many titles for less than either of the Internet book "superstores" and offers to donate 10% of your purchase to non-profit organizations!  In my quick and non-scientific review of the site I found prices to be around $1.00-$1.50 less than Amazon for most titles. The low prices available at Positively-You haven't gone unnoticed by consumers looking for a good deal. In about one year sales gone from $400 per month to over $4,000 per day, not bad for an operation run out of the family living room. It's still too soon to tell how things will work out, but on the Internet you never know what to expect.

CyberStuff from Reflinks - Part 1

Looking for that perfect document? Then come to RefLinks 973 where we have historic documents suitable for any occasion.

The Avalon Project, for example, is a tremendous undertaking by Yale University. It contains pre-18th century to 20th century documents in the areas of Law, History and Government. Here you find early historic documents of the United States and Europe, the Nuremburg War Crime Trials, Presidential Papers, Inaugural Addresses, Foreign Relations of the United States, United States Statutes, United Nations Documents and much, much more. Fortunately, the site is searchable by document, subject, author, or century.

Another site to find documents is A Chronology of U.S. Historical Documents from the University of Oklahoma Law Center. These all American documents cover the pre-colonial era to present day, including speeches and inaugural addresses of the Presidents. And, of course, it has Yankee Doodle! This site contains a bonus as it includes a link to Flags of the United States, State Flags, and Flags of United States Districts, Territories and Possessions.

‘Tis time for the wearing ‘o the green, ‘tis. And we all know its not easy being green. Just visit the frog page to see the life cycle these little guys have to go through.

And while you won’t find any legends about Kermit at the Legends site you will be able to find plenty ‘o Celtic myths to satisfy all curious little leprechauns.

All big leprechauns will want to visit the Webtender to help them get in the spirit this St. Paddy’s Day.

And, while you’re in the spirit, why not let the Irish Tourist Board take you on a virtual tour of Ireland? You may even get to kiss the Blarney Stone!
