A bit about Melissa - A Macro Virus Primer

Last week the Melissa virus began infecting large numbers of computers connected to the Internet. While Melissa is the most high profile macro virus to date, it is certainly not the most damaging or wide-spread - in fact it's not even close. Here are a few things that you should know about Macro viruses be to keep your computer healthy.

A macro is a small piece of programming code that is designed to perform a particular function, these pieces of code are commonly inserted into documents (such as those created by Excel, Word and Word Perfect) to offer enhanced functionality. As of result of being inserted into documents these macros travel with the document from computer to computer. Becasue macro viruses are just a harmful form of marcos they travel in the same manner. These viruses can be passed from computer to computer though the sharing of certain data files. Once your computer is infected with a Macro virus any subsequent documents you create will be infected and will be able to spread the virus to other computers.

Macro viruses can have a variety impacts; while the "payload" of the macro virus is small and usually rather harmless, this is not always the case. Macro viruses have been know to produce the following destructive actions: encryption and password protection your documents (without telling you the password), deleting files, randomly erasing documents when they are opened, and adding random (and sometimes profane) text do documents when they are printed or emailed.

How do you protect yourself:

  • Anti-virus software is a good start, there are a number of good commercial packages available that can stop most macro viruses.
  • Use WordPad (included with all Windows 95/98 and NT installations) or the Microsoft Word or Excel viewers (available from for free Microsoft) to view documents sent to you via email.
  • Enable Macro Virus protection in Microsoft Word and Excel. This will give you a prompt any time that you try to open a document containing macros, at that point just indicate that you want to DISABLE MACROS.

Good Luck and safe computing

Gertrude Stein Revisited: When a Rose is NOT a Rose: Toward a Typology of Support by Susan L. Golden

If you’ve been seeking grants for any period of time, you know that most grant-makers prefer to fund projects.  But you’re also aware that organizations need many kinds of support, of which project support is only one.  A tricky problem arises when, in your eagerness to secure financial support, you are tempted to describe something as a project which really isn’t.

You hope to slip one past the funder, in other words. But such an approach rarely works, and, in fact, it can backfire, impugning your credibility, and damaging any chance you have at establishing a good relationship. (Click here for entire article)

CyberStuff from Reflinks

Ahhhhh.....spring, and all the glorious colors that appear........the gentle blue of the sky, the brilliant purples and golds of the crocuses, and the vibrant orange of the highway barrel. Oh no! not orange barrel season again.....Reflinks to the rescue.

Ohio Department of Transportation: The Ohio Transportation Information System website gives current information on major road events, including construction information. Rand McNally Guide to Construction saves headaches when traveling out of state. Both of these websites are at Reflinks 912.

Oh, and you might want to check out the INTERNATIONAL BULB SOCIETY or the American Daffodil Society at Reflinks 635 for more conventional spring blooms. Of course, other information on bulbs might be found at Reflinks 926 under Thomas Edison. More bad puns, anyone?
