Proposed Changes to NOLA By-laws

The By-laws/Long Range Planning Committee has recommended two changes to the current NOLA By-laws. Please check the By-laws for these proposed changes - see Article V (Board of Trustees) sections B and G. Contact Phyllis Cettomai, the Chair of the Committee, before August 1, 1999 if you have any comments. The NOLA Board will vote on the Bylaws at their August 17, 1999 meeting.

Proposed NOLA Strategic Plan for 1999 - 2002

The By-laws/Long Range Planning Committee studied all of the information contributed by participants in the May 6th Planning Retreat and has proposed a revised NOLA Strategic Plan for 1999 - 2002. DHTML - Working With Layers

Recently I had a chance to work with the layer element of DHTML and I wanted to share my experiences and observations with other web designers. First some background - When working with layers in HTML each layer logically functions as a separate web page - each layer can have a background, bgcolor, and more. The interesting part of working with layers that every layer appears in the main window, therefore layers can be piled on top of one another, can be made to appear and disappear and more! as a designer you have complete control over where layers appear (x number of pixels left, down, etc.) and how they will be sized (height = 250 pixels, width = 175 pixels, etc). Want to see layers in action? Visit http://www.nolanet.org/workspace/learning_layers.html. For a more in depth examination visit http://devedge.netscape.com.

Almost forgot to tell you - you'll need Netscape 4.0+ to view these pages correctly. Internet Explorer does not correctly handle layers at this time.

Recommended Website -

U.Geek - is a valuable techie site offering a great deal of information on everything from USB and AGP to SDRAM and Easter Eggs. This site focuses mostly on hardware information, providing the resources you need to stay up to date on the newest processors and video cards. They also offer a pretty good (and frequently updated) guide to buying PC's and Laptops - answering questions like:

  • Should I get a new Mobile Pentium processor in my laptop?
  • What about about a DVD drive?
  • Is a Celeron processor ok for me?

DARN GOOD ADVICE THAT KIDS GIVE

Summertime gives us a grand opportunity to learn from our children by spending time with them (and with all of the other kids who end up hanging out at your house!) As you know, I like to quote the wise words of wisdom from some of the most memorable and interesting people in history...well...this week I present to you some of the best advice I have heard in a long while!

"Never trust a dog to watch your food." Patrick, Age 10
"When your Dad is mad and asks you, 'Do I look stupid?', don't answer" Michael, Age 14
"Stay away from prunes." Randy, Age 9
"Don't pull your Dad's finger when he tells you to." Emily, Age 10
"Puppies still have bad breath even after eating a Tic Tac" Andrew, Age 9
"You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk." Armir, Age 9
"Don't wear polka dot underwear under white shorts." Kellie, Age 11
"If you want a kitten, start out by asking for a horse." Naomi, Age 9
"Felt markers are not good to use as lipstick." Lauren, Age 9
"Don't pick on your sister when she's holding a baseball bat." Joel, Age 10
"Don't hold a dustbuster and a cat at the same time." Katy, Age 9

We all have a grand opportunity to learn from all of the children visiting our libraries this summer--ask them for their best piece of advice they can give you...you never know what they will come up with! Have fun with them!   Thanks to all of the children of my local playground program for taking the time to help me to bring a smile to your faces!

Planning for Fall?

I know, I know...it's only June...but soon enough, vacations will be a thing of the (recent) past, and we'll start keeping an eye out for those good deals on Christmas gifts! As you begin taking a peek at your calendar for September-December, 1999, don't forget that NOLA will have a GREAT line up of Continuing Education programs this fall!

Our Fall/Winter, 1999 CE Catalog will be printed in early July and sent out to all of our members and friends in mid-July. But, until then, here is a "sneak peek" at what's scheduled for this fall:

Legal Aspects of Personnel Management September 2nd
Genealogy on the Internet September 8th and October 19th
Cataloging Basics & Revisions September 15th
Dealing with Physically and Mentally Challenged Patrons September 16th & 17th (1/2 days)
Marketing Your Library October 27th
Weeding October 14th and 28th
Kids and the Internet November 11th
Streaming Media (a high technology topic for our "techies") November 17th
Plan It Right,  It Won't Go Wrong! December 8th

We will also continue with our technology training, interest groups and other programs that are pertinent to our members.

Please note that the above dates and programs may change--please consult with your CE Catalog when it arrives for final information on classes, dates, presenters, and location of programs.  Looking forward to ending this millenium with a Continuing Education "BANG" for NOLA members! Watch for updates on our Distance Learning project, which will kick off Year 2000 with a new way of providing CE to our members!
