ALA Hails Digital Divide Report

“Falling Through the Net III – Defining the Digital Divide” was released today by the U.S. Department of Commerce and its National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The report describes the increasing digital divide and the challenges for libraries, schools and community access centers as part of the public policy solutions to closing the gap between the information “haves” and “have nots.”  Click here for the ALA press release or here for the PDF version of the report.

From the Field - Brad Stephens

The computer world is full of trends - some good, some bad.   One recent trend is the development of the "free" or nearly free PC. A few months ago a company, FreePC, was the first to start a service where users could sign up for and receive a free computer. There was one condition - you had to agree to let them monitor your web surfing and purchasing decisions, but thousands of users thought this was a good trade and signed up, making the concept an instant success.  Well many others have followed FreePC's lead and now it seems that everyone is rushing to put free or inexpensive PC's in the hands of the consumer.  What will this mean for your library?

Summertime..A Time of Leisure??

Well, it's that time of year again...everyone jockeying for a small amount of time off (from school or work) for a scrap of leisure and fun! Each year, I feel guilty about taking some time off for my annual trip to my home away from home..Las Vegas..or Lost Wages, as some of my friends call it! But, I came across this quote and it makes me feel a whole lot better about going away!

"Every now and then, go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work, your judgment will be surer, since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgment. Go some distance away, because then the work appears smaller, and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen."

Who was the wise man who wrote this???
Leonardo Da Vinci

I guess he was really ahead of his time! I'll be sure to take his advice and come back with a clear(er) mind and harmony (and hopefully a fuller $$$$ pocket!!) I hope you enjoy your vacation and leisure time this summer as well!
