Michigan Town Reinstalls Filter and Lifts $100 Unfiltered-Access Fee

(ALA Press Release) - Citing ambiguity in a new Michigan law requiring libraries that filter "matter that is harmful to minors" to also  provide at least one unblocked machine for adults and chaperoned children, Georgetown Township Supervisor Henry Hilbrand announced August 4 that his town’s library was reinstating its policy of blocking all its public-access workstations. The suburban Grand Rapids library, which had filtered all eight of its machines since February, turned off the blocking software on one computer on August 2 to comply with the new law, which went into effect August 1. The library has also discontinued the $100-per-hour fee for unfiltered Internet access it established when it unplugged the one filter.

Asserting that township officials are committed to complying with the law while "protecting the moral values of our community," Hilbrand said in an August 4 statement, "It is the township’s belief that the Michigan legislature intends that the township may restrict Internet access to obscene/sexually explicit matters on all of its library computers."

New "Web-wide" Internet resource for parents launched; ALA urges library links

ALA has participated in the creation of a site designed to provide information to parents related to net access www.getnetwise.org. The site features areas on Internet Safety, tips and guidelines for Internet use based on age-level; Tools for Families, descriptions of filters and other technologies to help parents guide their children's Internet use; How to Report Online Trouble, links to law enforcement and advocacy groups; and A Guide to Kids Content, links to educational, entertaining Web sites designed for kids.

Great American Public Library Ranking (Part II)

The Great American Public Library Rankings will be released in September. The ratings will be posted on the ALA website at http://www.ala.org/alonline and will be included in the September issue of American Libraries.

Statewide Vender Discount Catalog Announced

NOLA is pleased to announce the development of a statewide Library Vendor Discount List. The list developed through a partnership of Ohio's seven regional library systems contains 33 vendors that will give NOLA members a discount greater than any individual library would receive on its own. All NOLA members will receive a letter this week with a username and password for the system. A link to the site has been placed on the front page of the NOLA website.  If you have any questions please contact [email protected]

New Internet Site Provides Free Stamps

MIAMI, August 23 (Reuters) - Companies give away free PCs and free Internet access to seize a piece of the exploding online business. Now, one company is giving away free stamps. Postage4Free.com Inc. Monday launched a Web site where consumers can go to get free pre-stamped envelopes in exchange for basic demographic data like age, income, tastes and habits. Postage4Free, which will subsidize the free postage with ads and promotions, plans to use the data to help advertisers reach their targets. The   company said it had established a network of sponsors that would use parts of the envelopes to promote special offers. After a consumer goes to the Postage4Free and completes an application, he would be sent a package containing 10 pre- stamped envelopes. Because the ads will be printed right on the envelopes, the company says it eliminates waste and clutter, while guaranteeing the ads will be seen by virtually 100 percent of the target audience.
