ALA Notable Books for 1998 The Notable Books Council of the ALA Reference and User Services Association has compiled this list for the general reader. These titles have been selected for their significant contribution to the expansion of knowledge and for the pleasure they can provide to adult readers. At Least You Will Be Prepared Pretext's latest issues dives into the seamy side of the web and shows the net underworld for what it is. The Dark Side of Cyberspace will at least prepare you for what you have to be on the lookout for at the terminals, including the porn but also gambling, hate groups, scams, etc. Also in the issue, an interview with Nadine Strossen; ACLU president. WARNING; there is some strong stuff past this point. They're From Another Planet Its become a cliche that kids these days are more savvy about technology than their parents. The N-Gen as Don Tapscott calls them, is the first ot grow up surrounded by digital technology. In Tapscott's words "To them the digital technology is no more intimidating than a VCR or toaster. For the first time in history children are more comfortable, knowledgeable and literate than their parents about an innovation central to society." The book is called "Growing Up Digital; The Rise of the Net Generation". But to be real cool, visit the website. Northern Light Catching Flak The popular search indexer is getting heat from independant authors for reselling journal articles. The site purchases rights from aggregators such as EBSCO and resells articles for between $1 and $2. Journal authors are complaining they should see royalties or this re-use should stop. Oh Bother Gwyneth Dunwoody, a Labor Party legislator, introduced a
question in Parliament to ask what plans Britain's culture secretary had to arrange for
the repatriation of Pooh, Tigger and the rest of the clan after half a century. The
tattered and faded toys that inspired the stories of A.A. Milne reside in the Donnell Library Center,
a public library branch of the New York Public Library. Items submitted by: |
