Inclement Weather Cancellations

Don't Let it snow , let it snow!!  The colder weather is upon us and it will be important for participants to know if a workshop has been cancelled due to weather conditions.  Between the the months of November and March members can choose extension 12 on the voice mail system for the most recent cancellation information.  The voice mail will be updated by 7:00 AM on the day of the workshop.

CORPORATE TRAINING

NOLA is holding a Holiday Open house on Wednesday December 9, 1998 from 3:00PM-7:00PM.  This will give NOLA the opportunity to display our training center to area businesses.  We will begin to heavily market our computer training to area business starting in January.  This marketing effort is to fulfill NOLA's Long-Range Plan to increase funding through corporate training.

Upcoming Continuing Education Opportunities

Just a reminder that there will be Reference Services Interest group on Monday November 30.  The REFLINKS project will be demonstrated for all who attend.  The REFLINKS group gave an outstanding presentation at the OLC annual conference.  They will be repeating the wonderful program for the interest group.

1999 Continuing Education Plan

"Well arranged time is the surest mark of a well arranged mind."  Pitman

The 1999 Continuing Education programs for Winter/Spring have now all been planned and slotted into the appropriate days and times through June, 1999. Now, all we have to do is work the plan, as they say.

Last week, I mentioned that I was going to save all of you from having to drive in the snow...well, no such luck! We have scheduled a skeleton schedule of classes for mid to late January and February, to ensure that you have access to the courses and workshops that you requested. Melissa Lattanzi and I have tried very hard to take any other major time constraints in your schedules into consideration in this year's course plan. To do that, we had to slot a few classes into the early part of Winter, 1999. Oh well...we tried!

I must say, we do have "well arranged time" scheduled, but I would have to disagree with (Pitman quote above) in well-arranged minds...Melissa and I certainly don't have well-arranged minds after working on this plan!

"Plan ahead: It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark." Richard Cushing

We will be e-mailing directors shortly to give you some "Save the Date" information on the early courses scheduled for 1999, and to get some additional input on some of the exciting workshops that we have in store for you and your staff in the coming months!

Ants, Bugs and Star Wars

"Tis the Season" for several movies to be released that are suitable for childen/teens to attend over the holidays.

Why not jump on the wagon and have a display of books related to the movies?

ANTZ

Antz has already been released and is still enjoying popularity. The movie is being advertised as a family movie but beware - there is a PG rating. The cast of "voices" is incredible: Woody Allen, Anne Bancroft, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Danny Glove, Gene Hackman, Sy Stallone, Sharon Stone and Christopher Walker. The story takes place on an ant colony beneath Central Park. The ants are accustomed to working for the colony - what happens when one ant wants to be an individual? This is the first animated film from DreamWorks. Roger Ebert rates it 3 1/2 stars. Visit the site at: http://www.pepsi.com/antz

There is one book: Antz: Junior Novelization by Ellen Weiss, DreamWorks Press, 1998. (Paperback)

Related books to display:

Two Bad Ants by Chris VanAllsburg Houghton Mifflin, 1988.
One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinore J. Pinczes. Houghton Mifflin, 1993.
The Magic School Bus Gets Ants in its Pants by Joanna Cole. Turtleback Books, 1996.
The Day the Ants Got Really Mad! by George Edward Stanley. (Scaredy Cats series) Aladdin Paperbacks, 1996.

A BUG'S LIFE

This family movie is being released November 25. Ants (again ants) and circus bugs confront the grasshoppers who each summer menace ants on Ant Island. The movie is from the creators of Toy Story. Voices by Julie Louis-Dreyfus, Kevin Spacey and Phyllis Diller. Visit the site at: http://www.disney.com/DisneyPictures/bugslife

There are numerous books being released:

A Bug's Life by Justine Korman. Disney Press, 1998. Paperback
A Bug's Life:Classic Storybook. MouseWorks, 1998.
A Bug's Life by Jeff Kurtti, Pixar Studio. Disney Press, 1998.
A Bug's Life (Disney's Pixar A Bug's Life) by Justine Korman. Golden, 1998.
The Big Rescue (Disney's Pixar A Bug's Life) by Eric Suben. Golden, 1998.

STAR WARS:EPISODE 1: THE PHANTOM MENACE

Not to be released until May 21, 1999. Can you believe that Tuesday, people paid money to see the two-minute trailer and then left before the movie was aired? Starring Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, and Natalie Portman. Visit the site and see the trailer at: http://www.starwars.com/episode-i/

No books on this episode yet, but you may want to have the following on hand for your teens if you can afford the $50 price tag:

Star Wars Encyclopedia by Stephen San Sweet. Ballantine, 1998.

Next Week: Pigs, Rugrats, and Wizards

Homeschooling Cont.

Kathy Sauline, former director at Girard Public Library and now teaching at Kent State Trumbull Campus, reminded me that there are many sites for homeschoolers
on the OPLIN page - Oh Kids Section. Check those out also - particularly if you are making links off your web page.

Carnegie Library Names Director

Ted Allison has accepted the position of library director at Carnegie Public Library (East Liverpool).  Mr. Allison brings over 18 years of professional experience to the library, having served as library director for both the Wayne County and Bellevue Public Libraries.  The NOLA staff would like to offer congratulations to Mr. Allison on his new appointment and wish him the best of luck with this new position.

Coming Soon to a Desktop Near You

Both Netscape and Microsoft are publicly releasing beta versions (MS an executable and Netscape the source code) of their 5.0 web browser software.  The early reviews don't indicate that either product will offer many significant new features impacting the end user, as many of the changes will be "under the hood".  The biggest change for the library community will be increased use of metadata by browsers allowing authors of documents to more fully describe the content.

Get the Beta Versions: NetscapeMicrosoft   (Please note: This is BETA software that is NOT supported by either vendor.)

I am looking for "how to" information on forming a book discussion group and would appreciate any and all information. My E-Mail address is [email protected] or you may call me at 440-593-1644.

Many thanks.
