Pigs, Rugrats and Wizards OR Movies Take 2

Last week I suggested libraries set up a display of children’s books related to movies that have been released this holiday season. In the next month and a half, many families will be going to the movies with their children, and libraries can easily tie in some good books with the movies, encouraging families to read together also. Here are three more holiday releases.

Babe:Pig in the City

Released November 25, this is the sequel to the Academy Award winning hit Babe. The original received seven academy award nominations in 1995 and also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture. This original screenplay has Babe journeying from the country farm to the city in order to help his “humans.” Oscar-nominated James Cromwell and Magda Szubanski again return to their roles as Esme and Arthur (Farmer) Hoggett. Also in the movie is Mickey Rooney and Mary Stein. Even music superstar Peter Gabriel sings a song about Babe during the movie.

Visit the site at http://www.babeinthecity.com
Here you can visit the characters, Babe’s friends, receive a behind-the-scenes look, or send a Babe postcard. Also you can enter a sweepstakes where the prize is an expense-paid trip for four to New York City, a $1,000 shopping spree, and a VIP tour of FAO Schwartz.

Of course you will want to display the original book about Babe by Dick King-Smith, but here are the new releases:

Babe: Pig in the City Movie Storybook. by Justine Korman and Ron Fontes. Random, 1998. Ages 4-8. ISBN: 0679891544 (Paperback)

Babe: Pig in the City Novelization by Justine Korman, Ron Fontes, and Dick King-Smith. Random, 1998. Ages 9 - 12. ISBN: 0679891560 (Paperback)

Babe Pig in the City: Beware of Dogs. Justine Korman. Random, 1998. Preschool. ISBN: 0679894551 (Paperback)

Babe Pig in the City: Friends to the Rescue. Justine Korman. Random, 1998. Preschool. ISBN: 067989456X (Paperback)

Rugrats

Billed as a “comic adventure for anyone who’s ever worn a diaper,” this features characters form Nickelodeon’s Rugrats show and is their first full-length animated feature. Released November 20, the movie has been receiving generally favorable reviews. Though the Movie Guru banned it, other reviews stated “great kids movie” to the LA Times critic that declared the movie has “success written all over it.” You decide!

The movie site can be found at: http://www.nick.com/rugrats.tin but you can also direct the children at the library to the TV show site: http://www.cooltoons.com/shows/rugrats/home.html

There are many books that have been released in the last year on the Rugrats including:

Bestest Mom by Susan Hood. Simon Spotlight, 1998. Ages 4-8. ISBN: 068982047X (Paperback)

Vacation by Molly Wigand. Simon Spotlight, 1998. Ages 4-8. ISBN: 0689820380 (Paperback)

Turkey Who Came to Dinner by Kitty Richards. Simon Spotlight, 1998. Ages 4-8. ISBN: 0689821433 (Paperback)

But here are a few titles released that directly relate to the movie:

Rugrats Movie: A Novelization. By Mark Dubowski and Cathy East Dubowski. Simon Spotlight, 1998. Ages 9-12. ISBN: 0671021060 (Paperback)

Rugrats Movie Storybook by Sarah Wilson. Simon Spotlight, 1998. Ages 4-8. ISBN: 068982128X (Paperback)

Tommy’s New Playmate by Luke David. Simon Spotlight, 1998. Ages 4-8. ISBN: 0689821417 (Paperback)

Wizard of Oz

It’s true that it plays every year on television, but it was released for the big screen on November 6. Visit the site at: http://www.thewizardofoz.com

One book has been written to tie in with this re-release:

Wizard of Oz Movie Storybook. Scholastic, 1998. ISBN: 059063268X

Library of Congress Builds History Web Site

Web surfers who want an armchair tour of the US can now see the first of 34,000 attractions from the Golden Gate Bridge to a windmill that started grinding grain in Bridgehamption, N.Y., 178 years ago. Photos, detailed drawings and historical background are being scanned at the rate of 1,000 a day for the Library of Congress, which operates the site. They will cover about 28,000 buildings, including Indian pueblos built in the Southwest centuries ago and the first McDonald's restaurant. Also included will be 6,000 engineering projects such as bridges and parks. "By the year 2000 ... we will have millions of the most important and interesting items of American history both from our own unparalleled collections and from those of other libraries and archives available free of charge over the Internet," James R. Billington, the Librarian of Congress, reported on November 19th.

During our Digital Collection Service Center's Open House last week, librarians saw how NOLA libraries are digitizing local collections and adding them to their web sites. Check out the Reed Memorial Library and Kingsville Public Library. If you are interested in talking with Brad Stephens, NOLA's Technology Coordinator, about a digital project, e-mail him at [email protected].

Bring Some Laughter Into Your Holidays!

The holiday season is upon us, whether we are ready or not! Everyone seems to begin decorating and shopping and "puttin' on the glitz" earlier and earlier each year!

Because of this "stretching" of the holiday season, we tend to "stretch" the stress associated with the holidays as well. I found myself feeling guilty for not having my decorations up the day after Halloween! Some signs of stress overload to remember during this season:

Irritability--are you annoyed at someone because they said they liked Mom's pies better than yours?
Insomnia--Do you say to yourself "Why in the world did I stay up until 4:00 a.m. basting a turkey?
Fatigue--Do you collapse after eating that fine turkey you stayed up all night cooking?
Intestinal Disturbances--Do you swear that "next year I won't eat so much"
Headaches--Mostly caused by muscle tension from gritting teeth while your family criticizes that turkey that you stayed up all night cooking
Weight Change--see "Intestinal Disturbances" above
Respiration Problems--Do you suffer from shortness of breath from biting your tongue so that you don't say something you'll regret later regarding comments
about your turkey?
Heart Irregularities--Does your heart "flutter" when your family walks in the door to eat?

If you answer "Yes" to three or more of these questions, you suffer from holiday stress! Guess you can join the rest of us crazy people who are out trying to do our best and make this year the best ever! Don't worry, be happy!

Take an opportunity this Thanksgiving holiday to enjoy your family, friends, and neighbors and take this good advice:

"Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can: All of them make me laugh."
W. H. Auden

Tell a good joke, spend some time playing a children's game (whether there are children around or not!), hold the hand of the one you love, and remember the fun times with those people you have loved and lost. Smile more. It's contagious!

Have a Great Holiday Season!

Legal battle leads library to pull the Internet plug

The debate over Internet filtering in public libraries has reached a new level. A recent decision by a federal judge in Virginia stating that libraries may not install Internet filtering software on public access computer systems. The decision has led the library involved in the suit, Loudoun County Public Library, to "unplug" access to the Internet until a board meeting next week.
